Brief Note on Mungi Group by Nisargved Charitable Trust

Just Living is not enough, Every living been should live blossoming in this
nature .We owe to nature for helping birds, animals, insects for their food ,
water etc. With initiative by Mr. Kiran Purandare fondly called as KIKA all
like minded people came together for nature conservation . We had formed
group “MUNGI” under the roof of NISARG VEDH Charitable Trust

“ Mungi “ means Ant . It works in a group, in a team and It works

continuously. We all living Creatures including Birds, Animals Insects
always need water , air and food for day in and day out . Mungi / Ant
keeps working through for collecting for young ones for self .

The MUNGI group was started with the purpose of encouraging people to
explore, observe, enjoy and understand the beautiful birdlife, wild life,
nature around them as well to maintain this birdlife, wild life, nature around
us for ever.

With aim as mentioned above we formed above group in the kind Guidance
of KIKA. We have around 25 members of the club.

Mr. Kiran Purandare has been studying birds and the ecosystem
surrounding them and its impact on them for more than 30 years now. He is
nature observer and stayed at Nagzira forest 400 days continuously. He
has done extensive work on bird conservation, most important of which is
conservation of natural waterholes , development of artificial waterholes
with help of locals and forest officials, Tree Plantation, Restoring of natural
water resources .Trees which are not only beneficial for humans but are
also essential for bird, animals, and insects.

NISARG VEDH Charitable Trust

Trust has undertaken a variety of conservation activities all over

Maharashtra and specially for Gond tribals residing in Gondia and
Bhandara districts. These activities mainly include, building more than
300eco-friendly artificial waterholes in the forests all over
Maharashtra, restoration of natural waterholes, native tree plantation
programs, trees for nutrition program and environmental awareness
programs in schools, etc.

While working for the local people for more than a decade now, the trust
has conducted medical camps, audio-visual presentations, environmental
awareness rallies in schools, distribution of nutritious food to school, kids,
distribution of bicycles, etc.

To take this conservation effort further, MUNGI club has decided to take up

1) Tree plantation activity

With a specific focus on planting trees that provide food (in the form of
fruits, berries, nectar and so on) and shelter (in the form of nesting and
roosting sites) for our feathered friends-the birds.

To begin with ,the club has planted close to 70 trees of native species with
survival rate of these trees at 100%.

The club believes that tree plantation is not a mere buying of saplings from
a nursery and planting them at any given location. Some of the major
factors that need to be looked into before planting a tree are whether:

 The tree species is native to the region where it is being planted

(Deodar tree cannot be planted in southern reaches of India as the
climate is not conducive there for it to survive)
 The soil is proper for the tree being planted to survive (soil having
termite colonies in it where only some tough tree species can survive)
 Water availability is as required for the tree species (acacias can be
planted in arid regions but may not survive in regions subject to
torrential rains)
 Other tree species in the vicinity are of any danger to the new tree
being planted (Eucalyptus trees ensure they get all the nutrition from
the soil and leave nothing for other tree species around causing their
death) and so on…
 Please note that we strongly advocate the policy of planting NATIVE
TREES ONLY.
 After the plantation is over club members shall pay periodic visits to
the site and provide necessary guidance to the concerned party if
required
2) Collection of Plastic waste
 As plastic is harmful to nature as well to birds, animals, during above
tree plantation activity, during our bird watching camps we always
collect plastic waste and bring it back and dump in dump yard. We
avoid using all plastic.
3) Natural Waterhole preparation in resorts ,fields
 Our aim is also building and maintaining artificial waterholes.
 This is normally located in shade of tree or on various natural path of
birds and animals.
 . Artificial waterholes are prepared with the help of HDPE plastic so
that water will not percolate in the land in any season. It is prepared
with saucer shape of pit .It is covered with High Density
Polypropylene. On top of this big boulders are placed in such a
manner that HDPE will not be visible. We put small sand ,
macadam etc so that small gaps will also will be covered. Once no
visible sign of HDPE then water will be filled.
 Such type of waterholes were prepared at Nanegaon m 55 KMS
from Pune, In wild life sanctuary at Mayureshawar , various . We
wish to plan 100 nos of waterholes in near future.
 Once birds, animals are habituated for the environment around this
waterhole , these start using this . One can study, take pictures, of
no of species coming on this natural facility .
 Some of the photographs of waterhole, birds are enclosed here with

4) Rejuvenation of water springs.

 In nature percolated water makes its on way to come out of earth in
the form of Natural springs. Due to various reasons like dust, dry
leaves, stones etc , This source of water to birds, animals , insects
Gets blocked. This water is also useful for humans, villagers etc.
 We had taken also as target to reopen these water springs by
cleaning all above so that water will start flowing again . We will
divert this source to small pond which will be again useful for birds,
animals, insects, and villagers.

For all above we need to travel to these locations bear around pune for
transporting trees from nurseries to resorts, frequent visits for taking care
of trees, waterholes etc. Normally we all mungis travel by our own
transport. If any commercial vehicle like jeep, etc is used the above
mentioned activities frequent visits can be increased for maintenance.
