Hermes
Hermes was viewed as a kind, friendly and, graceful youth. He held a caduceus staff
which had wings at the top and was entangled by two snakes. He wore winged sandals and a
winged cap. Hermes was known the god of trade, sports, athletics, tricksters and as the
messenger of the gods. He helped advance the dead to the Underworld and could put anyone to
sleep with his magic wand or lyre. The son of Zeus and Maia, he was married to Peitho the
goddess of seduction and persuasion. Maia gave birth to Hermes in a cave and then fell asleep so
tired that she couldn’t even walk. Hermes then had a chance to sneak away and steal cattle from
the god Apollo. On his way back to the cave, Hermes found a tortoise and invented the lyre from
its shell. Meanwhile, Apollo realized that his cattle had been stolen and demanded them back.
While Apollo was coming back to get the cattle, Hermes started to play his lyre. Apollo was so
surprised from the music that he let Hermes keep the cattle in return for the lyre. This shows that
Hermes is a great trickster. As the son of Zeus, Hermes had many siblings. He also had three
children named Pan, Hermaphroditus and, Tyche. Hermes was a very stealthy trickster due to his
cunning and clever personality. Hermes also represented fertility and great fortune. And,
although Hermes owned many symbols, his main symbol was the tortoise.
Hermes and I have many things in common. The main thing that we have in common is
that we can both be depicted as small, athletic, kind and, friendly. We are both very speedy,
cunning and stealthy which shows that we are both great tricksters. Additionally, Hermes and I
are both very creative in a clever way. Hermes is especially creative because he created an
instrument called the lyre from a tortoise shell. Another thing that we have in common is that we
both love sports and if I was a god I would like to be the god of sports, just like Hermes. Hermes
is also the messenger of the gods who leads the dead to the underworld. If I was a god I would
Hermes strengths were messaging, athletics, creativity and, being a trickster. Hermes was
great at messaging because he was able to move very fast and he could easily move between the
realm of the gods. Hermes was also outstanding at athletics because he was the speediest of all
gods and he was also one of the most athletic of all of the gods. He was also great as athletics
because he had the best sportsmanship and loved to play sports. Hermes was a great trickster
because he was cunning and used his intellect to outdo and confuse the other gods. He was also
very stealthy which also helped him be a great trickster. Hermes was also very creative because
he invented a lyre from a tortoise shell. Hermes had only one weakness and it was that he was
seldom able to stay still for long periods of time and that he always had to be doing something.
Hermes weakness was not having any downtime and being busy at all time as he was always
Hermes and I have many strengths in common including athletics, being a trickster and,
creativity. I am athletic like Hermes because I love to play tennis. I also love to run and I am
very fast runner, just like Hermes. I am also a trickster like Hermes because I am sly and stealthy
and can get away with doing many things. We are both sly because I can also steal something or
leave a place without anyone knowing. For example, when Hermes mother Maia became very
exhausted after giving birth to him in a cave, Hermes was able to sneak away and steal cattle
from Apollo. In addition, we are both very creative because we can create anything. For
example, Hermes created a lyre out of a tortoise shell, a tool that he created to be able to put
people to sleep. Lastly, Hermes only had one weakness which was seldom staying still for long, I
can relate to this weakness. Like Hermes, I also do not like to be idle. We both do not like being
lazy and we want to do something at all times. Most importantly, I can learn from Hermes story
that sometimes it’s good to not be doing something at all times and being idle keeps your mind
going.
