• OVERVIEW OF
PHARMACEUTICAL INDIUSTRY
Health is wealth but ailments are indispensable need of human life as well as other life forms.
Medicine is equally important to antagonize the disease. Along with development of new drug
leads to introduction of new procedures and machines for manufacturing and new controlled
methods for accurate definition of drug delivery. All those innovations and improvements
contribute to superior quality drug dosage forms and enhances concomitant production
economics.

medicines and medical devices. They are subject to a variety of laws and regulations regarding
the patenting, testing and ensuring safety and efficacy and marketing of drugs. The word
“Pharmaceutical” comes from Greek Word Pharmakeia. The modern translation of that is
“Pharmacia”.India is the largest provider of generic drugs globally with the Indian generics accounting for
20 per cent of global exports in terms of volume. Of late, consolidation has become an important
characteristic of the Indian pharmaceutical market as the industry is highly fragmented. India enjoys an
important position in the global pharmaceuticals sector. The country also has a large pool of scientists and
engineers who have the potential to steer the industry ahead to an even higher level. Presently over 80 per
cent of the antiretroviral drugs used globally to combat AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome) are
supplied by Indian pharmaceutical firms.he UN-backed Medicines Patent Pool has signed six sub-licences
with Aurobindo, Cipla, Desano, Emcure, Hetero Labs and Laurus Labs, allowing them to make generic anti-
AIDS medicine TenofovirAlafenamide (TAF) for 112 developing countries.
Indian pharmaceutical sector is estimated to account for 3.1 – 3.6 per cent of the global
pharmaceutical industry in value terms and 10 per cent in volume terms. It is expected to grow
to US$100 billion by 2025. The market is expected to grow to US$ 55 billion by 2020, thereby
emerging as the sixth largest pharmaceutical market globally by absolute size. Branded generics
dominate the pharmaceuticals market, constituting nearly 80 per cent of the market.

The Wax World contains beautiful statues of Indian freedom fighters like
Mahatma Gandhi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Krishna Gokhale among
many others. The museum also has wonderful replicas of social figures
like Mother Teresa and our former President, Dr.A.P.J.Adbul Kalam. Ooty
hotels and Ooty restaurants are easily available near the museum for a
quick bite before you carry on with your journey. The Wax World also has
many replicas depicting the typical Indian way of life, especially in the
villages. The whole setting of a village and people doing pottery and
farming and so on all made entirely of wax is a wonderful site. Being a
museum, there is no concept of best time to visit, other than when it is
open!

4. Botanical garden (ooty)
It ascends the slopes of the hill at an elevation of 2250–2500 metres above Mean Sea Level. The
garden enjoys a temperate climate, with an average rainfall of 140 cm, the most of which is
received during south-west monsoon, with frosty nights from November to February. The
maximum and minimum temperatures are 28 °C and 0 °C respectively.
The Government Botanical Garden, Udhagamandalm was established in 1848. Its architect
was William Graham McIvor. The Marquis of Tweedale prepared the initial layout during the late
1840s. The gardens were established by a subscription of Rs 3 per month amongst the European
residents for the purpose of supplying vegetables at a reasonable cost. During the time that
Ootacamund was under British control, considerable cultivation of vegetables for the market was
carried on by the European settlers and others. Captain Molyneux of the 2nd European Regiment
managed the vegetable cultivation. The subscribers received vegetables free of cost. But this
arrangement did not work out and in early 1847, a fund was raised by means of donations and
subscriptions with a view to forming a horticultural society and a public garden.
