Krakow sightseeing

A Must-See. The Guide.

Krakow sightseeing – The Krakow Royal Route

The Royal Route begins by St Florian’s Church with the main entrance to the Old City – St Florian’s Gate (no 1).
Walking along Florianska we reach the Main Square – the largest public square of medieval Europe, dominated by
huge Gothic St Mary's Church (no 2). Every hour from its taller tower we can hear a trumpeter playing the famous
Krakow bugle-call. Inside the church we can admire its greatest highlight of Wit Stwosz (no 3) – the largest Gothic
altar in Europe. Opposite to the temple the Momument to romantic poet Adam Mickiewicz (no 4) is situated. In the
centre of the Main Square there is the Sukiennice (no 5) – a rare example of a medieval structure that has for centuries
served as a commercial centre.

Leaving the Main Square by Grodzka Street, we pass the tiny

Church of St Adalbert (no 1) – the first church founded in
Krakow.
Running parallel to Grodzka, Kanonicza Street is a charming
street lined with recently renovated palaces and residences. Both
Grodzka and Kanonicza lead to the foot of Wawel, the religious,
spiritual and patriotic heart of Poland. Royal Castle (no 2) is the
seat of Poland’s kings for over 500 years and one of Europe’s
most splendid Renaissance royal residences.
Krakow sightseeing - Jewish Heritage Route - The
District of Kazimierz in Krakow

Originally, Kazimierz, that got its name from its founder King Kazimierz Wielki (Kazimierz the Great), was an
independent town. At the turn of the 15th century it became the centre of two cultures: Christian and Jewish. Many
heritage buildings (especially sacral architecture) that bear testimony to the magnificence of these cultures can be
admired to this day. The Jewish Heritage Route begins at very lively Centre for Jewish Culture (in Meisels’s Street)
and leads toward the Jewish temples – in turn: the Tempel Synagogue (Miodowa Street), built in 1862 for the
Association of Progressive Israelites, Kupa Synagogue (Warszauer’s Street) and Isaac Synagogue (Jakuba Street) –
both from 17th century, and, last but not least, the High Synagogue (Jozef’s Street) from 1590, the tallest of Krakow
synagogues.

For almost seven hundred years, Krakow was home to a large Jewish community. This was all but
extinguished during the II World War, yet the echoes of this world can still be felt across the city. Kazimierz
now has a Jewish cultural center, several Jewish style restaurants with appropriate cooking and klezmer
music every evening. Every year in June there is a festival of Jewish culture when music fills the streets,
drawing a host of young Polish and international fans.
