Experiment 1: Resistors and DC circuits

A. Resistors in Series and Parallel

Given: Vin = 5V; R1 = 1 kΩ; R2 = 2 kΩ; R3 = 2 kΩ

Construct:

1. Measure: I, V1 , V2 , V3 , I1 , I2 , I3
2. Calculate (theoretical): I, V1 , V2 , V3 , I1 , I2 , I3
3. Get % error for: I, V1 , V2 , V3 , I1 , I2 , I3
4. What are the possible sources of error for both circuit configurations?

B. Voltage Divider
1. Using the set of resistors and the input voltage in part A, design three voltage dividers to produce
Vo ut = 2.50 V; 1.67 V; 3.33 V. Draw each circuit.
2. For each voltage divider, calculate the RT h .
3. Construct the three voltage dividers and measure Vout . Compare with the theoretical values in
part B1.

C. Loading Effect
Construct:

1. Vary RLoad and measure RLoad , VLoad , and ILoad . Suggested RLoad values: 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1,
1.25, 1.5, 1.75, 2, 2.5, 3 kΩ.
2. Plot the ratio VLoad /VIn vs. RLoad and ILoad vs. RLoad . Analyze the two plots. What is the
“loading effect”?
3. Calculate the power delivered to the load (PLoad ) using ILoad and VLoad . Plot PLoad vs. RLoad .
Comment on the role of RT h in terms of the transferred power.
