Most large cities now have an underground system, like the French “Metro”. When you need to
change trains, you usually ought to walk along bare, uninteresting corridors. Sometimes, if you are lucky,
there will be “buckers”- people playing music in the hope of earning a few pence. They will be very
pleased if you throw a few coins into the hat they have placed on the ground in front of them, but they will
go on playing happily even if you don’t. These buckers give us a moment of pleasure as we wait for our
trains. It is pity, then, that the authorities are against bucking, and do what they can to stop it. Buskers
may be breaking the law, but I think that most people are glad to have little music to brighten their busy
lives.
