APPLE BEST FIT APPROACH

 According to Porter (1986), organisations pursue a differentiation strategy through

performing its activities in the value chain in a unique manner relative to their
competitors. Product innovation positions a company’s products in a unique way that
creates better value for customers enabling organisations to demand a premium price.

 Schuler’s Employee Behaviour model highlights 3 strategies- accumulation, utilisation and

facilitation that businesses could adopt in order to reinforce appropriate
employee behaviour to match the company’s competitive strategy namely:
accumulation, utilisation and facilitation (Schuler, 1987).

 Apple employs a facilitation strategy designed to support its differentiation business

strategy creating a “best fit”.

 Facilitation Strategy is characterized by reward policies that offer egalitarian pay and
numerous incentives, extensive training & career development policies and employee
relations policies ensuring high employee participation, cooperative labour management
relations and job security (Gunnigle, Heraty and Morley, 2011b, p. 52) .

 Egalitarian Pay - Salaries at Apple are competitive, being rated the third highest
paying organisation in US above Google and Microsoft. The median pay at Apple was
$121 000 per annum in 2018 (Stebbins, 2018).

 Employee participation - Inclusion and diversity are now an important part of Apple’s HR
agenda focused on creating a more inclusive organizational culture (Pratap, 2017). Female
representation in leadership positions is 29% and female numbers under 30 has increased
by 5% since 2014. Apple is one of the best employers for LGBTI equality by the Human
