Activate Phases
Prepare: initial planning & preparation for the project. In this phase the project is started, plans
are finalized, project team is assigned, and work is under way to start the project optimally.

Explore: perform a fit/gap analysis to validate the solution functionality included in the project
scope and to confirm that the business requirements can be satisfied. Identified gaps and
configurations values are added to the backlog for use in the next phase.

Realize: use a series of iteration to incrementally build and test an integrated business and

Prepare through Deploy Phases

Once the team determines the appropriate approach for the customer, the project
execution follows one of the SAP Activate methodology versions for:

• New Implementation on-premise
• System Conversion
• Landscape Transformation

Run Phase
Upon successful transition to production the business and IT teams manage the
solution.
While the business team focuses on driving the adoption, the IT team focuses on IT and

Work Stream Description

Project Management: covers planning, scheduling, governance, controlling &
monitoring the execution of the project.
Application - Design & Configuration: covers the validation of scope, identification of
detailed business process requirements, fit-gap analysis, functional design of the
solution. Covers the configuration, setup, and unit testing of the system (without custom
development) to fulfill customer requirements per solution design. Items that can be
configured include but not limited to: forms workflows, user permission/security, screen
layout, reports, master data setup, modifications, etc.
Application - Testing: covers test strategy, planning, test case development, and
execution of User Acceptance Test, integration Test, Performance Test, System test.
Application - Integration: covers identification of integration requirements, integration
points, integration approach, and integration solution design.
Application - Solution Adoption: covers value management, organization change
management (OCM), and end user training.
Custom Code Extension: Covers the design, development and deployment of system
functionality that can not be provided by standard product and needs to be custom
develop. (Focus is on solution extensibility beyond the RICEFW that are covered in Design & Configuration and
Integration).

System & Data migration: covers the discovery, planning & execution of moving
legacy data to the new system and archiving of legacy data. This work stream also
covers cutover planning, preparation, management and execution of activities to
cutover the system into production. It also includes the hyper-care support period
shortly after cutover.
Technical Architecture & Infrastructure: covers the solution landscape, deployment
concept, system architecture, technical system design, environment (Dev, QA, PRD,
failover) setup, technology operations standards and process.
Transition to Operation: covers the establishment and setting up of the helpdesk
process, incident management process, post go-live change management process and
user related operations standards and process.
Others
Cutover Management: covers planning and execution of activities to cutover the system into
production including the hyper- care support period shortly after go –live.
Customer Team Enablement: covers the enablement of the customer project team to work on the
project effectively. This include standard product orientation to prepare the customer for product
requirements and design discussion, as well as key user and admin training to prepare the customer
for test case development and test execution.
Solution Walkthrough: covers demonstration of the configured/developed solution to the customer
project team after each iteration cycle for customer acceptance and identification of adjustments

Accelerators by Phase

Delivery supplement: additional information including change to the solution, in relation

to an earlier solution and any other important delivery-relevant aspects.
Solution Scope: A definition of the package, used to understand the detailed and
predefined scope. Basis for statement of work, for any service provided.
Software & delivery requirement: a list of all prerequisites that are needed before
deployment can start, in terms of system, content, tools, and project.
WBS, schedule & effort estimation: a decomposition of the work to be done by the
project team to complete the project objectives.
Project Governance & Management Plans: Establish project delivery governance and
plans for managing risk, quality scope, etc.
Customer presentation: a master deck that covers the scope of the solution & the
service.
Master data overview: a table to understand the sample master data shipped in the
package.
Organizational data overview: a table to understand the organization model data
shipped in the package and how it relates to the software.
Process Diagrams: a graphical representation of the steps in a scope item.

solution in an area.
Project backlog template: repository of all delta requirements and gaps to plan
iterative, incremental build during the Realize phase..
Configuration guides: a detailed description of the required configuration.
Test Scripts: a procedure for testing the activated system according to the defined best
practices.
Agile approach guides: project team guides that explains how to structure project into
release and iterative sprints.
Cutover plan: template for cutover planning and execution. Provides framework for
transition to production. Provides list of critical cutover steps.
Project Schedule: a basic project schedule that includes aggregated duration and a list
of required skills/roles.
