(A Longquan Celadon ‘Twin fish’ dish, Late Southern Song-Yuan dynasty, 12th – 13th
Century)

Picture taken at CMU, University Museum. (Feb.

This object we have chosen is one of the oldest artifact that can be found
inside the University Museum of Central Mindanao University (CMU). It is under
the Chinese Trade Goods section, wherein a lot of interesting artifacts are being
displayed. A Longquan Celadon ‘Twin Fish’ dish is a rounded sides rising from a
tapered foot to a flat everted rim, the interior moulded with a pair of vodorsed carp,
the exterior with lotus petals, covered overall save for the footring in a sage-green
glaze, japanese box. Having 22.3 cm, 8 ¾ inches. The popular ‘Twin fish’ dish is
originally designed or produced from the Southern song dynasty to the Yuan
dynasty.
The Longquan ‘Twin fish’ dish or also known as fish plate in the museum
of CMU was donated by one of the collectors of old artifacts in the past. But
unfortunately the collector was died before the CMU trace him to ask some details
or information about his collection. That’s why in this part, we did our research
online about this artifact. It was cold fish plate because of its two fish symbol on
its center. It is considered as a lucky symbol in chinese culture, the two fishes
symbolizes conjugal fidelity and unity for marriage, and represent fertility and
abundance as they multiply rapidly.
This artifact was here in the Philippines because it was being traded, since
our country is rich in terms of products, that’s why the other country exchanged
some of their goods as a trade to our products. The Longquan Celadon ‘twin fish’
dish is about 1200 years old, we can see and prove it to the picture that, it was
cracked and some of its part was broken due to its age. It was obviously used for
eating purposes. Served by the chinese favorite foods like, Sweet and Sour Pork,
Kung Pao Chicken, and many more.
Through this artifact, it tells us about our history, for us to understand well
what happen in many years ago before our existence in the world. It tells that the
globalization was begin in years and years ago. The exchanging of products
between the countries, building relationship to each other. Because of the
globalization, it widen our mind not limited only to our country. Through this
relationship also makes our country develop and the most important of all is to
have a global peace to all the countries and to all the country men.
We believe that the Longquan plate is an object comes directly from the
past. We can prove that through its old base design, the cracks around the object,
and some of its parts was broken because of its age. We cannot denied that we
are visited by the other country for exchanging products, and for some purposes.
That’s why we can say that the displayed in the museum is not just a replica. But
the original that comes from the Primary source.
