A lth ou g h the Finches were extrem ely rich, they were v e ry relaxed. T h e o n ly w a y people knew
that they were ric h was because o f their beautiful house and their long-serving butler. ‘ James w as here
when w e bought the house’ , Lord F in c h alw ays said. ‘ W e can’t live without him now. He alw ays
knows best!’
O n e day, L o rd and L a d y F in c h were having a party at their country house. T h e y invited their
neighbours, A m bassador R a yn o r and h is w ife L u c ille , for dinner. First, everyone met in the entrance
hall. Then , James served everyone a glass o f champagne in the liv in g room. There, L u c ille and L a d y
Finch stopped at the w indow to enjoy the v ie w o f the garden. Afterwards, they m oved to the d in in g
room to sit dow n fo r dinner.
Suddenly, halfw ay through the m eal, the am bassador’ s w ife cried, ‘ O h dear! Som ething terrible
has happened. I’ ve lost m y n ecklace!’ ’ D o n ’t worry. W e ’ ll find it!’ said L o rd Finch. ‘James can fix
anything. Jam es?’ L o rd F in ch called to the butler. James entered the dining room and turned to L u c ille .
‘ What kind o f necklace is it?’ he asked. ‘ O h a very special one’ , she said. ‘ It was given to m y
grandmother by Q ueen V ic to ria .’ A fte r that, James quietly w alked out o f the room.
L u c ille w as te irib ly disappointed w ith James; but five minutes later, he returned w ith the
necklace. The p e o p le in the room reacted w ith surprise. H e then explained how he did it. ‘ It was
actually quite easy, m y lo rd ’ , he said calm ly. ‘ M adam R aynor mentioned that the necklace was
received from Q u e e n V icto ria. So, I realised that it was v e ry old. O ld necklaces can break very easily. It
was easy to guess that the necklace fe ll o f f somewhere. I o n ly had to find out where it happened. So, I
sim ply follow ed her steps for the d a y .’
