Is the US weaker than the EU?

The results of the economic recovery comparison between the United States (US) and the

European Union (EU) since the Great Recession are striking. Both the US and the EU experienced

the economic recession almost at the same time. However, the differences in recovery between the

two organizations are evident. The second recession that EU underwent slowed up the rate at

which it recovered from the previous one. The two organizations have since experienced and

handled economic and technological problems differently leading to different levels of problem-

solving. This paper will, therefore, seek to solve if the US is weaker than the EU.

Economically, the US may be stronger than the EU. Although the US was the epicenter of

the Great Recession in 2008, the measures that it enforced enhanced its quick recovery than the

UK. For instance, the recession made the US introduce policies such as the monetary policy which

lowered interest rates to almost zero in 2008 which have remained unaltered up-to-date (Weisbrot,

2014). The reduced interest rates encouraged both large scale and small scale manufacturers to

enter the market which helped to upraise the situation. While the US was subsidizing on interest

rates, the UK was busy tightening its budget. The International Monetary Fund (IMF)

recommended a budget tightening for all 27 EU nations at the time. Such a move favored an

increment in taxes which was brutal considering the situation back then. The formulation of

policies in the EU worsened the financial crisis which slowed up the recovery process from the

Great Recession and possibly contributed to the second European recession in 2011 (Weisbrot,

2014). The policies that the US opted thus made its economy stronger than that of the EU.

Although the EU may have lost economically to the US, she still boasts a complex

technology protection over the US. In 2018, US-based Company (Facebook) exposed the personal

information of almost 50 million users (Isaac & Frenkel, 2018). The Facebook data breach was

one of the most massive information breaches in history. Software flaws in Facebook’s systems

contributed to the information hacking that prevented users from accessing their user accounts.

The EU is yet to experience such significant data breaches which indicate that their data security

system is somewhat developed than those of the US. The Facebook data breach made the EU

Commission to suggest to the US that they need to strengthen their data controls significantly

(BBC, 2018). The tension of US data spilling into the digital sphere is always in a delicate phase.

The EU could pose a danger to the US due to its low military expenditure and its vast

market. However, the EU lacks unity, especially after the Brexit (Nye, 2016). The EU thus poses

a little long-term danger to the US. The industrial sector of the EU is impressive than that of the

US. It, however, fall back in terms of higher education to the US in that it only has 27 universities

ranked in the global top 100 while the US has 52 (Nye, 2016). For the past few decades, the EU

has faced severe demographic problems. Low birth rates and unwillingness to accept mass

immigration has resulted in demographic issues. However, there is currently an immigration wave

that may solve the demographic problems of the region. The problem with mass immigration is

that it may threaten the unity of the EU. There is a possibility that if the EU overcomes its internal

differences, it may balance the American power but not equal it.

The discussion on whether the US or the EU is stronger than the other is broad and open

to different response from different people. There is neither a strong US nor a strong EU. Although

the US may seem to have power than the EU, the EU will always remain relatively as rich as the

US. The only major disadvantage that the EU faces is fragmentation. A unified EU has the potential

to gain power as that of the US. However, it is safe to state that each region has its stronghold in

which it outshines the other.
