(Les Misérables)
Jean Valjean, a paroled convict just trying to make a new life for himself
stole the silverware from the Bishop Myriel; it looked like his short-lived freedom
was over. It turns out that the Bishop was willing to forgive Jean and even let him
keep the silver if he promises to be a good and honest man. Jean discarded his
parole papers and takes a new name, soon becoming a rich man and was kind
enough to rescue a dying prostitute and took on the job on saving her daughter.
Everything turned out alright until Jean revealed his true identity in order to save
a man falsely accused of being, well, him. Inspector Javert is soon on his trail, while
Jean runs off to make good on his promise to save Fantine's daughter Cosette.
Jean manages to track down Cosette, and is barely able to elude Javert by
sneaking Cosette into a convent. Once they're out, Jean takes on yet another
new identity. But Cosette growing up, getting pretty, and falling in love with a
young man named Marius. Jean is so worried about the attention this will bring
that he decides to take Cosette to England. As the rebellion hits its climax, Marius
is conveniently shot through the shoulder and passes out as the French army
slaughters all of his rebel buddies. Lucky for Marius, Jean Valjean carries him into
the Paris sewer system. Just when it looks like they'll make it, Inspector Javert
catches them. Javert lets them go because Jean saved him from being killed by
French rebels a little earlier in the movie. Unfortunately, this merciful actions
confuses Javert so much that he kills himself by jumping off a bridge. Jean is in the
clear, but now that Marius and Cosette are married, he feels obligated to tell
Marius about his criminal past. When he does, he gets himself banished from
Cosette's life. Valjean sees little reason for living without Cosette, so he stops
eating and slowly wastes away. Marius eventually finds out that Jean was the one
who saved him from the French army. Enlightened, Marius grabs Cosette and runs
to Jean's bedside. But they were too late as they found Jean dead.
Why I liked the movie. First, the music is phenomenal. Every song that comes
out from the movie, you just feel the emotion bursting out. You could really tell
what they want you to realize. They let you feel like you’re part of the movie and
make you feel the emotion that they are feeling. Second, the characters are most
likely unforgettable. From the protagonist seeking redemption for past sins Jean
Valjean and the young and beautiful Cosette to the villainous Inspector Javert, it
is hard to argue that this is a show that is lacking in strong lead and supporting
characters. Third, it’s a musical adaptation that actually works. Before it turned
into musical. It was originally a novel, Adapting pre-existing material for the stage
is not exactly an easy task, yet this is one of the rare musicals that not only pulls it
off, but does so seamlessly.
The lessons that can be learned from this movie is boundless. One thing that
the movie taught me was that No matter what, God's got you. The movie showed
us that in times of struggle, Valjean turns to the church. When no one accepted
his papers and allowed him to stay under their roofs, Valjean found sustenance
inside a church with Bishop Myriel. When he rescues Cosette and avoids the hands
of Javert, Valjean escapes to the convent. Second, forgive everyone, even your
enemies. Forgiveness is never an easy task, but having the movie show us that in
just one look, Valjean forgave Javert despite being the enemy. Lastly, a mother
will do anything to save her child. Fantine sends her only daughter away in hopes
she may have a better life, labors tirelessly in a factory to send her money, and
sells her locket, hair and body to make enough money to send her sick child
medicine. Fantine teaches us that a mother’s love is endless and eternal. She
shows us the harder side of being a mother and helps us appreciate how much
our own moms do for us.
I recommend this movie to the children. There is a lot they can learn from
this movie. As saying the goes, children are the future. Especially in today’s time,
children tends to walk in the wrong path. The reason I want to recommend this
movie, is so that they can learn from the mistakes that the characters did in the
story. Nothing good comes from doing bad things.
If I were given the privilege to rate this movie. I would rate it a 9/10.
