What is PERT in project management? PERT is a project management planning tool

used to calculate the amount of time it will take to realistically finish a project.
PERT stands for Program Evaluation Review Technique. PERT charts are tools used
to plan tasks within a project – making it easier to schedule and coordinate team
members accomplishing the work.
PERT charts were created in the 1950s to help manage the creation of weapons and
defense projects for the US Navy. While PERT was being introduced in the Navy, the
private sector simultaneously gave rise to a similar method called Critical Path.
PERT is similar to critical path in that they are both used to visualize the timeline and
the work that must be done for a project. However with PERT, you create three different
time estimates for the project: you estimate the shortest possible amount time each
task will take, the most probable amount of time, and the longest amount of time tasks
might take if things don’t go as planned.
PERT is calculated backward from a fixed end date since contractor deadlines typically
cannot be moved.

Do you need a switch or plug at all?
When raising the IQ of your traditional home, you can adopt a device-by-device
approach -- in which you slowly replace large, dumb devices with smart ones over time -
- or you can use smart switches and plugs.
If you want all the smarts of a connected TV, for instance, then a smart plug won't cut it.
But if you want all the small pieces of your home -- like lights, fans, air purifiers and so
on -- to cooperate, then switches and plugs are a good fit.
And if you just want smart lights in your home, then you can consider smart LED bulbs.

Which one should you buy -- a switch or a plug?
You've decided a smart switch or plug really is what you need. Now the question is,
which one should you get? In-wall switches, like Belkin WeMo Light Switches or Lutron
Switches, are convenient because toggling them is as natural as hitting a normal light
switch. Plus, you get the added smarts of remote control, scheduling and automation.
In-wall light switches are convenient to use, but take some work to set up.

That means if you have light fixtures you want to automate, but you want to keep their
normal wall-switch control too, then in-wall smart switches are what you need.
Smart plugs, like the iDevices Switch, offer many of the same features, but also
increased flexibility, as you can plug in whatever device you want. And if you want to
change your setup, it only takes a minute. Smart plugs also are more likely to include
the power-monitoring feature that in-wall switches don't have.
To toggle a smart plug like this iDevices Switch, you have to either press the button on
the device itself, or use the app. Neither is very convenient, so you'll want to take
advantage of its scheduling features.

Smart plugs don't always have the same easy manual toggle of in-wall switches, so
they're usually better for scheduling and automating miscellaneous devices or lamps.
What technology is already part of your routine?
This is an important question to ask, simply because how well your tech cooperates can
be as important as the tech itself. As a general rule of thumb, the devices you already
use around the house, whether it's an iPad or Android device, Nest or Ecobee, will work
better with some switches and plugs than others.

What are ZigBee and Z-Wave and why do they matter?
Wireless communication is the basic way smart home devices send data back and forth
to each other and to your phone. Pretty much every major smart plug or switch will say
on its packaging that it is Z-Wave, ZigBee, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connected. These are the
way devices communicate with other gadgets around the house.

Z-Wave and ZigBee are both radio protocols that require a hub of some sort, to translate
the language of the device to a language your phone can understand. These plugs are
often more affordable -- if you already use a platform like SmartThings or Lowe's Iris. Z-
Wave and ZigBee devices fit well into larger smart home setups. If you just want one or
two devices, you probably should look elsewhere.
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi both connect directly to your phone. That means they're perfect as
stand-alone products. Bluetooth devices like Zuli plugs don't have the away-from-home
remote control of Wi-Fi plugs. But Bluetooth technology allows for presence-reactive
automation that the Belkin WeMo Insight Switch, for instance, just can't replicate.
What features are must-have?
The trick is to find the most affordable switch or plug that meets the needs of your
particular setup. These devices typically include any combination of the following
features: presence-sensing automation, scheduling, energy monitoring, integrated
automation with other smart home gadgets, surge protection and dimming.
Zuli's Presence feature allows you to automated the switches and any additional Philips
Hue LEDs you might own based on when you enter a given room of your home.

The more features you add to a smart plug or switch, the more it will generally cost. A
low quality Bluetooth plug like the Nyrius Smart Outlet, for example, will only set you
back 25 bucks. A higher quality Bluetooth plug like Zuli's will be closer to $60. But Zuli's
presence-sensing feature is far more precise and reliable, and it integrates with other
smart home devices.
The best affordable smart plug, with scheduling, power monitoring and remote control, is
the $25 Geeni Energi. It's a solid entry point for general usage, which brings us to our
final question:
How will you use my smart plug or switch?
If I were to add a smart plug to my entertainment setup, I would use the Tri Cascade i-
Bright7x smart surge protector. It would protect my TV and PlayStation 4 from electrical
surges, keep my PS4 on all the time, but allow me to separately cut power to my TV, so
it wouldn't suck energy while I'm out of the house. Plus i-Bright has USB chargers, so I
could charge my phone anytime I sat down to play for a few hours.
The Tri Cascade i-Bright7x Surge Protector is packed full of design and software
features. But it also costs over a hundred bucks.

Many smart switches and plugs, like i-Bright, have specialized functions. In-wall switches
will mostly reside indoors, along with most smart plugs. But some outdoor plugs, like the
GE Plug-in Outdoor Smart Switch or the iDevices Outdoor Switch, are made to withstand
exposure to the elements.

We will start with the simpler of the two: smart plugs. These cheap (and getting
cheaper) products are very easy to install and set up, and are the perfect starting point
for making your home smarter. They're also renter-friendly, as they don't require
installation, and can simply be unplugged and taken with you when you leave.
Smart switches are a bit different, and are wired into your home's electrical supply,
usually replacing your current light switches. Although, this isn't always the case, as we
will explain later.

Smart plugs
Smart plugs mean almost anything can be controlled by your phoneTP-Link

Smart plugs come in many shapes and sizes, and their prices vary. Generally speaking,
the simplest of smart plugs can be bought for around $12 to $15 each — or in packs of
two for $25 or four for as little under $50.
These little devices plug into your wall outlets, and have a socket on their back for
anything to be plugged into them — such as a fan, lamp, television or any number of
household appliances and devices.
Inside, they have a Wi-Fi chip that speaks to your router and home network. To set
them up, you download a smartphone app which connects the plug to your Wi-Fi controls
switching the plug on and off. You can also set timers in the app, and connect the plug
to an Amazon Echo or Google Home smart speaker. Many smart plugs also have a
physical on and off switch on them, which means they can be controlled without your
phone or voice — or by a less technically-minded member of the household.
A number of manufacturers offer smart plugs for between $20 and $30 for a pair,
including Anbes, Etekcity, Amysen, Apromio, which tend to run small, review well, and
are often available with next-day Amazon Prime delivery.

Smart power strips are also available, which are essentially four smart plug and four USB
ports in a single device. Each of the four smart sockets is surge-protected, like one made
by Conico, and can be individually controlled by your smartphone or by speaking to
Alexa and Google Assistant.

These products will all do the simple job of adding a WiFi-connected on and off switch to
your devices, but there are several ecosystems of plugs, switches and other smart
products made by better-known manufacturers which might be more suited to your
smart home needs. These include:
TP-Link Kasa
TP-Link's Kasa platform includes a range of smart plugs priced from around $23 each,
while a two-pack can be bought for a little under $40. TP-Link also sells 'mini'
versions which take up less space, along with more expensive plugs that monitor energy
usage through the Kasa app.
Although you could argue the cheapest option is best, you might want to consider the
Kasa ecosystem, which includes smart light bulbs, light switches, security cameras and
other smart home devices. As well as being controlled by the Kasa app, these devices
can also be controlled by Alexa and Google Assistant.

and outdoor lighting, a baby monitor, and wired light switches.

iDevices
iDevices sell smart plugs with energy monitoring and Alexa support for just under $30,
along with weather-resistant outdoor smart plugs and a socket for making your existing
bulbs smart without requiring a smart home hub. Working much like a smart plug,
the iDevices socket holds a standard light bulb, which is then placed into the existing
socket in your ceiling, and controlled via the smartphone app.

Finally, there is Elgato Eve, which GearBrain reviewed, an ecosystem which includes
smart plugs and wireless light switches from around $50, to door and windows
sensors, motion sensors, outdoor weather sensors and a complete weather station.
Do more with IFTTT
IFTTT helps smart devices to talk to each other, unlocking new featuresiStock
Smart plugs are all well and good, but they can be made to do much more with a free
platform called If This, Then That (IFTTT).
IFTTT applets are little instructions which tell smart home devices to react based on data
given to them. For example, a smart plug can be told by IFTTT to switch on every time
an air quality monitor (like the Awair or Foobot) records high levels of toxic air, known
as VOC, in your home. Fit an air purifier or even just a regular fan to this smart plug,
and you have yourself an automated air ventilation system, where the fan switches on
whenever air quality falls.

Wireless smart switches

Generally speaking, there are two types of smart home switch: wired and wireless.
Wireless switches are renter-friendly because they do not require any changes to the
current wiring and switches in your home. In some case, they don't even need to be
stuck on the wall.
For example, the Philips Hue smart lighting starter kit includes a Wi-Fi dimmer switch.
The switch has four buttons, is configurable via the Hue app, and comes with a magnetic
mount which can be stuck to your wall. That way, you can leave the switch lying around
wherever it's most convenient, or stick the mount to a wall and place the dimmer in its
magnetic holder when you don't need it to be portable.

An interesting alternative here is Switchmate, which GearBrain has reviewed, wireless
switches that fit over the top of your current rocker or toggle switch, then physically
moves them when activated by a smartphone app. They are battery powered and attach
above your existing switches magnetically. The switches then connect to your phone via
Bluetooth, where they can be controlled by Alexa, Google Assistant, or the Switchmate
app itself.
Pressing the switch still activates your light, but now you can control them with your
phone from up to 150 feet away (depending on the layout of your home). You can also
set schedules so they come on each evening, or more regularly while you are on holiday
to deter potential burglars.

Wired smart switches
Wired switches offer a neater solution, but require DIYBelkin

For the homeowner who wants a more integrated way of controlling their lights, wired
smart switches provide the answer. These are not suitable for renters as they require the
removal of existing switches and the wiring-up of replacements — something your
landlord will likely not allow.
The first step is to understand the wiring of your home, as in many cases you cannot
simply replace an old switch (or thermostat, for that matter) with a smart one and

Smart lightbulbs are all the rage, but there are other options for making your lighting
smart, too.
When it comes to starting a smart home, lighting is one of the simplest ways to get
going. You might assume that starts with a smart light bulb, but there are other ways to
add smarts to your lighting.
Smart bulbs, switches and plugs can all contribute to a well-lit, well-connected home.
Each avenue of smart lighting is different, with its own pros and cons.
Let's take a look at the options and the best ways to use them.
Smart bulbs
Philips Hue bulbs come with a hub that connects to your router.
CNET Lutron's smart switch controls your existing lighting fixtures.
Smart bulbs come in many shapes, sizes, colors and configurations. With smart bulbs,
you can smarten any existing light fixture like a kitchen pendant light or bedside lamp.
They are great for single-bulb fixtures or small groups of light fixtures you'd like to add
smarts (or even color-changing capabilities) to.
You can buy smart bulbs individually, but many come in starter kits (like this one from
Philips Hue) that include a bridge to connect the lights to your Wi-Fi. This lets you use
remotes, apps or voice assistants to control your lights.
Other smart bulbs, like the ones from Lifx, don't need a bridge, but instead connect
straight to your Wi-Fi.
Smart bulbs can integrate into other smart home tech in scenes and routines
with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri.
Smart switches
Smart switches are a great way to make your lighting smart without the expense and
hassle of replacing every light bulb in your home. For instance, if you have one or two
switches that control many recessed lights, opting for a smart switch is likely more cost-
effective.
Wired smart switches like the ones from Lutron and Wemo replace your existing switches
and are wired into your home's electricity.
Lutron's line of switches also requires a bridge plugged into your home's router. There's
even talk of completely battery-less, wire-free switches from Philips Hue.
One thing to look for: some smart switches don't work with three-way lighting setups
(where one light is controlled by two different switches in your home).
Take a look at what you have in your home and as always, make sure you turn off your
circuit breaker before doing any electrical work or contact a licensed professional to
install.

Smart plugs
There are a range of smart plugs available.

If you're looking to smarten standalone light fixtures like lamps, consider a smart plug.
Without replacing the light bulb, smart plugs allow you to connect your lamp to voice
assistants and smart home hubs.
Smart plugs don't just power products on and off; there are some very useful features
hidden in smart plug apps. Some smart plugs monitor energy, providing a real-time and
daily, weekly or monthly report of how much energy it uses.
Away mode, available in many smart plugs, simulates someone being at home by
randomly powering devices on and off during a set window of time. That's a useful way
to deter intruders while you're out of town.
The biggest downside to smart plugs is design. Some smart plugs look great, but block
adjacent outlets with their size or shape. Other plugs are downright ugly, but do a good
job of keeping adjacent outlets free for other uses.

The options with smart lights and internet integrations are broad and support a ton of

installation, and can simply be unplugged and taken with you when you leave.
Smart switches are a bit different, and are wired into your home's electrical supply,

Smart plugs mean almost anything can be controlled by your phoneTP-Link
Smart plugs come in many shapes and sizes, and their prices vary. Generally speaking,

These little devices plug into your wall outlets, and have a socket on their back for

physical on and off switch on them, which means they can be controlled without your
phone or voice — or by a less technically-minded member of the household.

including Anbes, Etekcity, Amysen, Apromio, which tend to run small, review well, and
are often available with next-day Amazon Prime delivery.

platform called If This, Then That (IFTTT).

Scenes (this is the term most often used, but it might vary) let you program

If you're concerned about the environment or hoping to save a few bucks, look
for a plug that supports energy monitoring. Just keep in mind that the energy
data collected isn't uniform across all plugs. Some, like the Belkin Wemo Insight,
provides a detailed breakdown of how long your device has been on over the
entire day, your daily average "on" time, your (estimated) monthly and daily
power costs, and your average power usage in watts. Others simply give a
cursory overview of hours used over a period of time. And many don't report
power usage at all.
Features aside, installation and app design are also major factors. Luckily, pretty
much all the plugs we've tested are easy to install—you basically just plug them
in and connect them to an app on your phone. App quality, on the other hand,
varies. We take a close look at each plug's companion app in our reviews, and
consider its usability in our rating.
It's All About the Platform
Ultimately, the best smart plug for you is the one that easily interacts with the
products you already have. For example, if you have an iPhone, an Apple TV,
and a HomePod, you'll get the best experience from a plug that supports Apple's
HomeKit protocol. Similarly, if you already use Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant
voice control, make sure to get a plug that supports your voice assistant of
choice. Some plugs feature native support for Nest products, while others can
interact with other smart home devices via IFTTT. We've noted which features
are supported by each plug in the chart above to help determine which one best

not everyone knows what the grid is, let alone the Smart Grid. "The grid," refers to the
electric grid, a network of transmission lines, substations, transformers and more that

its patchwork nature to its capacity. To move forward, we need a new kind of electric
grid, one that is built from the bottom up to handle the groundswell of digital and
computerized equipment and technology dependent on it—and one that can automate
and manage the increasing complexity and needs of electricity in the 21st Century.
What Makes a Grid “Smart?”
In short, the digital technology that allows for two-way communication between the
utility and its customers, and the sensing along the transmission lines is what makes the
grid smart. Like the Internet, the Smart Grid will consist of controls, computers,
automation, and new technologies and equipment working together, but in this case,
these technologies will work with the electrical grid to respond digitally to our quickly
changing electric demand.
What does a Smart Grid do?
The Smart Grid represents an unprecedented opportunity to move the energy industry
into a new era of reliability, availability, and efficiency that will contribute to our
economic and environmental health. During the transition period, it will be critical to
carry out testing, technology improvements, consumer education, development of
standards and regulations, and information sharing between projects to ensure that the
benefits we envision from the Smart Grid become a reality. The benefits associated with

emergencies such as severe storms, earthquakes, large solar flares, and terrorist
attacks. Because of its two-way interactive capacity, the Smart Grid will allow for
automatic rerouting when equipment fails or outages occur. This will minimize outages
and minimize the effects when they do happen. When a power outage occurs, Smart
Grid technologies will detect and isolate the outages, containing them before they
become large-scale blackouts. The new technologies will also help ensure that electricity
recovery resumes quickly and strategically after an emergency—routing electricity to
emergency services first, for example. In addition, the Smart Grid will take greater
advantage of customer-owned power generators to produce power when it is not
available from utilities. By combining these "distributed generation" resources, a
community could keep its health center, police department, traffic lights, phone System,
and grocery store operating during emergencies. In addition, the Smart Grid is a way to
address an aging energy infrastructure that needs to be upgraded or replaced. It’s a way
to address energy efficiency, to bring increased awareness to consumers about the
connection between electricity use and the environment. And it’s a way to bring
increased national security to our energy System—drawing on greater amounts of home-
grown electricity that is more resistant to natural disasters and attack.
Giving Consumers Control
The Smart Grid is not just about utilities and technologies; it is about giving you the
information and tools you need to make choices about your energy use. If you already
manage activities such as personal banking from your home computer, imagine
managing your electricity in a similar way. A smarter grid will enable an unprecedented
level of consumer participation. For example, you will no longer have to wait for your
monthly statement to know how much electricity you use. With a smarter grid, you can
have a clear and timely picture of it. "Smart meters," and other mechanisms, will allow
you to see how much electricity you use, when you use it, and its cost. Combined with
