Cello Suite No.1 in G major, BWV 1007 (1717-1723)


Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Johann Sebastian Bach, a German composer and musician of Baroque Period. He is


one of the greatest composers all the time. He spent his life mainly in three places:
Weimar, Köthen, and Leipzig.

Cello Suite No.1 in G major, BWV 1007 is one of the six unaccompanied cello suite
written in Köthen, during 1717-1723, while he served as Kapellmeister. The suite
starts with Prelude. It mostly contain the arppegiated chords, creating the steady
motion through the whole movement. The second movement is Allemande, the
opening is an upbeat note B, followed by a G major chord. The rich harmony and
flowing irregular phrase make this dance beautiful. Courante which begin with
energetic upbeat and quavers, set the whole movement in bouncy, high energy and
lively mood perfectly. Sarabande is short, but gently and harmonically direct in its
smooth phrasing. Minuet I is a gentle and particularly bouncy triple meter dance,
followed by Minuet II which has a darker tone colour, making a direct contrast with
Minuet I. The whole suite ended with 6/8 meters lively dance movement- Gigue.

Sonata in A minor for Arpeggione and Piano, D821 – Allegro Moderato (1824)

Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

Franz Peter Schubert, an Austrian composer of the late classical and early romantic
period. He was very prolific although he died at age 31.He wrote over 1500 work
during his lifetime.

Sonata in A minor for Arpeggione and Piano, D. 821, is one of the famous piece by
Schubert, written in November 1824, in Vienna. This was originally written for
arpeggione, a six stringed instrument, tuned like a guitar, but play with a bow like
cello. This piece is transcribed and commonly played on viola/cello and other
instrument nowadays. The first movement opens with theme by piano and later on
repeated by viola, leading to the livelier theme and first part ending with plucked
chords on viola. The material from first part reappear in the development, ends in a
brief cadenza that leads to the recapitulation. The whole piece is ended with a
saddening coda.

Viola Sonata in D minor – Allegro Moderato (1825-1828)

Mikhail Glinka (1804-1857)

Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka, a Russian composer gain wide recognition in his own country.
He influenced a lot of Russian composers. Viola Sonata in D minor is an early work
written by Glinka but never finished. The first movement Allegro Moderato was
composed in St. Petersburg in 1825. The second movement was written few years
later when he visited Moscow in 1828. There are some reports mentioned that Glinka
did finish the second movement, Glinka abandoned the work when he began the
third movement. Glinka revised the two movements of this viola sonata in 1850s, but
the sonata was not published until 20 century.

Henri Vieuxtemps (1820-1881)

Henri François Joseph Vieuxtemps was a Belgian composer and violinist. Vieuxtemps
studied under the virtuoso violinist, viola player and composer Alessandro Rolla. His
teacher might be the one who inspired Vieuxtemps’s interest in discovering the
possibilities of viola.

Capriccio "Hommage à Paganini" in C minor, Op. 55 was published and issued


posthumously with a set of six pieces for unaccompanied violin under various opus
numbers between 1881 and 1887. The marking - Lento, con molta espressione, sets
the mood perfectly. The opening material reappear few times later, leading to an
agitated climax, before the whole piece ended with soft plucked chords.
