D-day essay

D-day or better known as the battle of Normandy interested me and made me

dive deeper into learning about it. I have never really learned about any wars. Doing
this topic expanded my knowledge on many other topics like ww2, the allies and the
axis power, and some places in Europe. I also wanted to learn more about the ships
and planes they used in world war 2 and in the battle of Normany they used a huge
amount of ships and planes.

In ww2 Canada was part of the allies (U.S., Britain, France, USSR, Australia,
Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Greece, Netherlands, NewZealand,
Norway, Poland, South Africa, and Yugoslavia) who were fighting with the axis power
(Germany, Italy, Japan, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria). Canada provided a great
amount stuff for the allies in the battle of Normany. The Canadian troops landed on
Juno beach while other Candian paratroopers landed East of the Beaches.

The axis power began to invaded Europe from Poland starting world war 2 on
September 1, 1939. By 1944 the Germans took over most of Europe. The Germans
push most of the allies to England across the channel. The allies made a plan for an
invasion but it was a secret operation, known as Operation Overlord, which meant it
wasn’t talked about a lot. The axis power heard about the invasion but they didn’t
know where they were going to strike.

General Dwight Eisenhower, commander of Operation Overlord, plan was to

strike on June 5 but it started to rain and thunder so the ships couldn’t sail across the
channel to France. General Dwight Eisenhower got a special meteorologist to tell him
when the weather would be good conditions to invade France. The meteorologist said
that June 6 is when we could attack. The allies planned to invade France on the
beach of Normandy. They came up with code names for the beaches that the allies
took. Canada took Juno, America took Utah and Omaha, and Britain took Gold and
Sword. The allies lost many troops to the axis power but they managed to capture the
Normandy beaches back.
People all over Europe were affected by the battle of Normandy. People say it
was the beginning of the end of the war because the allies started to rise above the
axis power. D-day was the plan to start taking back Europe from Germany. If
Germany would have taken over Europe and won world war 2 life for everyone could
be different. The battle of Normandy was also important because in the invasion the
allies used new technology, new materials, and new tactics that we later learned from
and modified.

My perspective of the battle is from the Canadian side. Canada provided

14,000 troops, 110 ships, 10,000 sailors, and 15 fighter and fighter-bomber
squadrons for the battle of Normany. At the end of June 6, 1944, there were about
1,070 Canadians that suffered from casualties and at least 350 that died. Throughout
out the whole battle of Normandy, 18,700 Canadians suffered from casualties and
more than 5,000 Canadians died. But in the end they helped the allies sucessfuly
take back Normany and later all of Europe.
