 SUMMARY
As we are living our daily life we Observes each thing and even want to change certain things
of society so that we can make a better tomorrow. As ITM along with the help of MAGIC
BUS gave us an opportunity to interact with children which I expressed as “A step to get
closer with society”.
As the days passed, we became a part of the school which we were Assigned and we shared a
very good relationship with the students. The students are so Bright and they just need little
encouragement in order to become the shining stars of tomorrow.
After the end of our journey we realise one thing that “Nothing will give us inner satisfaction
and happiness more than doing a selfless job”, and this is what is practiced by MAGIC BUS . I
salute the spirit and the path MAGIC BUS is following of EDUCATION,
EMPLOYMENT AND EMPOWERMENT which are the most strong pillars of our
society.

 INTRODUCTION
MAGIC BUS is a non-profit NGO. It is a charitable organization that specializes in the
education and empowerment of less-privileged children, youth and women through working
with them at an individual level. Their nationally-recognized programmes include schools,
remedial education, computer training, adult literacy, skills training, microfinance and social
entrepreneurship.

It was founded in 1985 by Ms. Rashmi Mishra, it began with her teaching a class of five girls
in her home on the campus of IIT Delhi. MAGIC BUS now offers programs in five major
cities across India, in some of the poorest neighbourhoods of Delhi, Haryana, Mumbai and
Bangalore. Their team of about 350 people includes local and foreign volunteers, teachers and
staff and a large circle of committed friends, donors and well-wishers. MAGIC BUS has
made a difference in the lives of more than 220,000 families over 29 years, over 2,500
women have been empowered to earn their own living, and more than 120,000 people across
20 rehabilitated slums in Delhi and Mumbai have benefited from their programs.
Sponsors span across India, the US and Europe, some providing constant support to them, and
thousands of volunteers have worked with them over the years. India is home to a multicultural
and multiracial population of 1.2 billion people (that’s 17.5% of the world’s population)– over 50%
of them under the age of 25. It’s the world’s largest democracy, and its third largest economy as
nation that regained independence just 60 years ago, India faces many challenges, one of which is
the wide disparity in income, education and exposure among the population. While there is steady
improvement every year, at MAGIC BUS they think that ensuring a high quality of education,
practical knowledge, and enough opportunities to get into skilled vocations makes a significant
difference to the lives of the individuals affected, and empowering them.

A now common approach to empowering first-generation learners is a combination of basic state-

level education for children and improving basic welfare. But education needs context and
applicability to harness individuality and diversity, without which it may simply contribute to more
disillusionment within underprivileged communities. Moreover, MAGIC BUS believes that
education should involve not just the child, but the family and community, as well. Educating
mothers is the cornerstone of our method, as the mother is usually the main caretaker of the
family, and has the most influence over her children.

Background/History of Ngo

It has been three decades since MAGIC BUS undertook the task of transforming lives of
thousands of people. The changes we see in people, in communities, in students continue to
surprise us. A multitude of people have contributed selflessly to the founder’s vision and
helped MAGIC BUS grow. It was 2011, the year MAGIC BUS Mumbai started its journey
from inside IIT Powai into the communities outside. This journey continues with success
stories of students who now confidently face the world with renewed awareness, knowledge
and aspire for careers in law, banking, medicine, writing and many more fields. There are
new beginnings each day as MAGIC BUS continues to bring about social reforms through
education. They know that their Mission has been successful when their beneficiaries return
to MAGIC BUS as mentors and volunteers. They know that they are making a difference
when their efforts manifest in their students’ efforts to be agents of social change. If you enter
Phule Nagar in Powai and you will see students rushing to classes, greeting teachers, ex-
students awaiting their scholarship formalities, volunteers armed with ideas for classrooms,
saplings making their way to the

MAGIC BUS green corner etc. The ‘MAGIC BUS Lane’, as it is fondly called by Team MAGIC
BUS has an atmosphere that is both infectious and inspiring. Now the real story begins.

UMANG Beyond School Program in Communities:

MAGIC BUS Mumbai’s flagship program, umang, which started with 60 children at
Chaitanya Nagar 8 years ago today spreads education to 450 students across 4 communities in
Powai. The program helps with Academic Enrichment, Reading Proficiency, Life Skills,
English Speaking and Digital Empowerment. Saturday Clubs, DEAR Time, Circle Time as
well as Excursions are an essential part of the curriculum. The MAGIC BUS umang child is
physically healthy with a curious mind, environmentally conscious, respectful of diversity and
filled with confidence and aspirations to compete in the outside world. Our “Beyond School”

 Aim/objectives

MAGIC BUS makes stories like this happen. They are a 30-year old NGO based in India that
believes in social change through empowering the most vulnerable members of
underprivileged communities: the women, youth, and children.

MAGIC BUS create peerless programs with our approach of holistic, practical education and
vocational training. There’s more to educating a child than academic knowledge What a child
can do with good education is limited only by opportunity, attitude and exposure.

There are many successful initiatives in India that aim to increase school attendance in less
privileged communities, but very few that enable children to discover where they can go from
there. MAGIC BUS works to fill this need.

Their flagship program, the MAGIC BUS School in Gurgaon, was founded on the principle
that true education requires head, heart and hand, and that less-privileged children should
receive the same exposure and facilities available at the country’s best schools. It is accredited
to the CBSE syllabus, and our students achieve grades that compete with some of the best
schools in India. They expose them to ideas that make them think about the world around
them, and many of our students here have dreams of social change and entrepreneurship.
They use creative methods in their classrooms, and incorporate a system of learning values
and spreading knowledge to family members and their communities. The Bal Vihar School,
their first project, continues to enrich the community it resides in. The children look forward
to each day of learning, and no teacher has left since the schools’ inception.
Other programs for children include the Bhavishya-yaan and Beyond School programs, where
they augment the syllabus taught at government schools with classes on computer skills, life
skills and spoken English. They believe these are pragmatic skills that increase a child’s ability
to communicate confidently, focus on tasks and take initiative in finding information– and it
continues to help them once they’ve finished school.

 Activities undertaken by the NGO
Run Run Run
The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon (SCMM) 2014 had a huge MAGIC BUS
participation. Thirty five students and five staff members went for the Dream Run. Ganesh
Khirsagar, alumni turned teacher ran the Half Marathon. Pradeep Deshpande- a true blue
mentor, and veteran runner raised 1.7 lakhs as the MAGIC BUS Dream Maker. He ran the
Half Marathon for the 4th time for MAGIC BUS finishing in just close to 2 hours! In
Addition Mumbai Core Management team raised an online handsome donation. MAGIC
BUS is grateful to Founder and Chairperson, Rashmi Misra for fuelling the spirit of
participation in the Marathon. A shout out for all our donors and pledge raisers who made this
wonderful opportunity even more beautiful with their participation

LITERACY MONTH
International Literacy Day is celebrated every year on September 8, as declared by UNESCO.
They started by participating in the Pratham event. Soon after they took the stories in Big Books
and pen drives to neighbouring schools and non profit organisations. Team MAGIC BUS
with its teachers and volunteers was able to reach more than 500 children across communities
in Powai and Milind Nagar. Roshni Vishwakarma, an eight year old, self proclaimed
bookworm says, “I love reading. This was the best activity that MAGIC BUS could come up
with. I absolutely loved it.” Surveys suggest that when an adult reads to a child in a Non
threatening environment and allows for exploration of the story, the young reader learns to
mimic the adult, develops a huge comfort with the print. It has rightly been said that reading
opens the doors of our imagination and lets us think beyond. One of the objectives of the
event was to allow students the opportunity to become bookworms because there is nothing
as amazing as being one!

Reading and Film Club Corners

This summer in the various community centres during the month of May, the much waited
Reading Corners and Film club came alive. With a significant increase in the number of
students that enrolled this year in comparison to last year, more than 60 community children
along with the 86 in house children enrolled in the program thus bringing this number to a
whopping 146. The books read by the children cover a wide range of topics, in three different
languages: English, Hindi and Marathi. The teachers in the centre were amazed to see the thirst
for reading amongst the children. MAGIC BUS is especially thankful to the teachers and
dedicated mothers who manned the reading corners with great responsibility and enthusiasm
despite the heat.

TEACHER DEVELOPMENT AND UPGRADES:

Who Am I workshop
MAGIC BUS Mumbai had its first ever offsite workshop for teachers and staff during the
skill upgrade week! A two day workshop titled “Who am I.” It was held at the Sanjay Gandhi
National Park, Mumbai! We believe that a teacher creates magic like none other and holds the
key to unlocking a child’s potential. MAGIC BUS believes that nurturing a teacher is the key
to everyone’s growth. The workshop was designed to align personal goals with

objectives. To do this they took the help of a multifaceted trainer /educator Anand Pendharkar
who understood the teachers and helped facilitate this wonderful workshop. It brought out the
hidden skills, talents, aspirations and best practices which will facilitate growth, both of the
individual and the organisation. “It helped us bond and reflect, as we explored ourselves and
tried to connect the dots with our personal potential and organizational roles. Yes, not all was
fun and games, the hard questions and the attempt to find answers and concrete takeaways was
the meat of the program

Awareness against Child Sex Abuse

A training of teachers on the sensitive issue of child sexual abuse was conducted by Rihaee, a
non profit organisation working on such issues in holistic ways. The awareness session on child
sexual abuse was an eye opener for all the teachers. It helped them clear the myths on child
abuse and get a fair idea on recognizing and reacting responsibly towards instances of child
abuse. Such training is invaluable in the current scenario of rampant reports of sexual abuse of
women and children. Thanks to Team Rihaee for helping MAGIC BUS build a sturdy safety
net for children against sexual abuse

English speaking
MAGIC BUS ’s dedicated volunteers Vaishnavi and Mallika tailored a 1week English Speaking
module based on the demands of the teachers. It is well established that knowing English is a
necessity to communicate globally. The session was made enriching and interesting with the help of
videos, participating in role plays, conducting mock interviews and by singing songs. The teachers
immensely benefitted from it along with having fun!

 STUDENT PROJECT ACTIVITIES
Description of the project theme & area (location)
MAGIC BUS create peerless programs with our approach of holistic, practical education and
vocational training. There’s more to educating a child than academic knowledge What a child can do
with good education is limited only by opportunity, attitude and exposure. Volunteers divided in two
parts:

1. Bhavishya yaan:
In partnership with Rotary Club of Bombay, this program runs in eight municipal
schools for 120 selected students in each school from standard VI-IX. It provides
guidance for computer skills, life skills and English with a view to enhance educational
and employment opportunities for students of regional language schools. In addition
these students also take part in specially designed camps and go on field trips conducted
by MAGIC BUS and Rotary Club. The beneficiaries of BhavishyaYaan are regional
language municipal schools students.
2. Beyond school:
Beyond the regular academic classes, effort is made to improve computer efficiency and
adult literacy. Extra -curricular activities also include art and craft, dance and music, story-
telling, yoga and meditation. Health and hygiene issues are discussed. Regular sports and
spoken English classes are also conducted. Cleanliness is an everyday activity and each
child is motivated to follow simple health and

 It is felt that without a certain level of English education, the children of these schools
will not be successful in life.
 During our Survey, one of immediate needs expressed by children at almost all the
learning centres was to “Learn English”.
 The focus of this programme is thus on teaching spoken/ functional language and
numeric skills.
 The emphasis would be on USE of English WORDS and not teaching English
GRAMMAR.
 The programme is run in selected schools with the help of volunteers.
 The duration of the programme is 2 hours of Teaching English, maths, science
preferably on Saturdays.
 The syllabus prepared by is taught by volunteers. It can be covered by volunteers in 12
weeks-16 weeks.
 Each volunteer has to commit for at least 25 hours of Teaching spread over 12 weeks.
 Besides, there are Orientation classes for volunteers at the beginning & Review
meetings in between.
 Volunteering is an act of love and rewards are great and priceless. Seeing the
underprivileged blossom under your tutelage is a rewarding experience. We also
contribute in improving the educational standards of the schools of our country and thus
serve our motherland.

 Major activities
Day1:
Objective for the day:
The objective for the day was to take charge of teaching the under privileged students of
MAGIC BUS ’s BEYOND SCHOOL program and to understand the school’s rules and
policies followed by interaction with students. our group was assigned to teach the students
of Phule Nagar which is one of the branch of MAGIC BUS .
Objective accomplished:
Our group successfully completed day 1’s target, we went to Phule Nagar and we interacted
with the teacher in-charge Disha Jain. she explained us our respective duties & we also
interacted with the students.
DAY2:
Objective for the day:
As it was children’s day, so the objective of the day was to ensure that the kids are having
fun.
Objective accomplished:
we played & dance along with the kids, we also played word games & musical chair with
them and we distributed chocolates to them.
DAY3:
Objectives for the day:
The objective for the day was to test the general knowledge of the students.
Objective accomplished:
We gathered all students from classes l to class Vii. We observed that there were few bright
students but most of the students have very low general knowledge. Thus, we made them sit
in a circular way & ask them basic general knowledge questions & the answers of which
were unknown to them we wrote it on the board. Thus, we achieved our objective.
DAY4:
Objective for the day:
The objective for the day was to make teaching aids for easy understanding of the subject for
the children & also to teach them.
Objective accomplished:
We made number cards, expressions, charts of days, weeks and months, parts of speech &
format of informal letter & we also taught kids maths.

Project Objectives
 To create awareness amongst the students the importance of education and make them
goal oriented. We try to bring new and fun way of teaching so that they take interest in
studies.
 To send overall day assessment report to the D.F. and respective faculty members.
 To coordinate with the group members.
 To make daily time plan to be followed.
 To keep account of each activity from our side as well as from student’s side.
 To help school for some extra activities.

understood so that they can get into these activities which will benefit to those children
who need our help.

the real world.
3. Each and every student is unique and have different skills and it is important to nurture
their talent and to help them as they are the future of this country.

Conclusion
It is a great initiative by MAGIC BUS as today it is necessity to help them because there
are millions of such people who need us and it is our responsibility to help them, to
support them in any way we can weather it is teaching, education, medical, financial help,
etc.
Last but not the least I learnt an important aspect from MAGIC BUS is always “Begin
with self, Begin small and Begin today” then we can contribute our level best as human
being to our society. This journey of two weeks was one of the golden times I ever had. As
an individual I improved my skills of leadership, team work and cooperation from this
internship. I wish and pledge myself that in future also I will love to work with MAGIC
BUS so that I can add more value to our society.
