Sermon
Text: 2 Timothy 2:15
Timothy was a young man who was converted and circumcised during Paul‟s missionary
journey and was Paul‟s co-workmen at one time (Acts 16:3). He was spiritual son of Paul
“my true son in the faith” (1 Tim1:2). So being a spiritual father, Paul tried to encourage
Timothy to be very careful in presenting the word of truth. Paul also doesn‟t want anyone to
look him down “let no one despise you for you are young, but set an example” (1 Tim 4:12).
1. Approved Before God
In this particular given text, we see Paul was urging Timothy to present the truth in a way
God approved. During his era, there was strong teaching totally contradictory to the truth
among the Christian community by Hymenaeus and Philetus. They were teaching that the
resurrection is already past (2 Tim 2: 18), and because of this wrong notion many believers
were confused and shaken in what they have believed. Therefore, here Paul is encouraging
Timothy to understand and counsel to be diligent in representing the word of truth. Some of
the word that holds solid foundation for Timothy in doing and in presenting that he might be
approved before God.
Do Your Best: Here the word „do‟ is something to do practical with an action. It would not
make sense if action is not taking place. So, Paul was urging something practical that should
be done in action, to show in action. And the word „best‟ refers giving full effort and with a
spotless achievement. Dictionary defines “best is used to refer things of the highest quality
or standard”. Paul did not ask Timothy just to do something, but asked to do he can effort.
Paul encouraged him to do the best that he may be approved by God. The reason is, if he is
thorough with the word of God, anytime it would be easy for him to defence wrong
teaching. Because, in a meanwhile the word of God has a power to reprove and rebuke in
times of wrong teaching (2 Tim 4:2), therefore Paul urged him to be ready with his best and
to be faithful in presenting God‟s word.
So do, today the word of God is telling us to give our best effort that count acceptable in the
sight of God. God demands the best from us. We read in the book of Exodus “the best of the
firstfruits of your ground you shall bring into the house of the LORD your God” (23:19).

Therefore, being a servant of God we should give our best time and effort that pleases God.
We should be so assiduous in presenting God‟s word.
2. Faultless Workman
The term “workman” is generally reference to an agricultural labourer, but here Paul used
the term to describe a labourer for God, and described God‟s servant who does not need to
be ashamed. Which means one who have fully focus on knowing God and no lacking in
desire to share the sound doctrine. Hymenaeus and Philetus were also ministering the people
in conflicting from the truth. Their own fancy intellectual was spreading and injecting into
the hearts of the believers. However, they were not accepted servants in the sight of God.
So, Paul encouraged Timothy not to be like one who teaches a different doctrine and does
not agree with the sound words of the gospel (1 Tim 6:3), a workman who is not accepted
by God. But rather Paul advised Timothy to be perfect workman who does not need to be
embarrassed for poor quality work.
In a meanwhile Paul also encouraged Timothy to follow the pattern of the sound words he
learned from him (2 Tim 1:13). Since there were false teachers in Timothy‟s time and he
was a young pastor, so consequently Paul encouraged him by bringing him faith “I know
whom I have believed and He is able” (2 Tim 1:12). Here Paul‟s point was that, even in the
midst of false teachers not to be disappointed but to be perfect workman in work, because
God is able to help.
Furthermore Paul counselled him to be clavered, always be sober minded, do the good work
of evangelist, fulfil your ministry (2 Tim 4:5), and to keep closed watchful of his teaching
which he was assigned to work (1 Tim 4:16), not by seeking to please people but to God
(Gal 1:10). Many a times we attempt to seek to please men rather than God. We take God‟s
name, but our ministry become people‟s ministry rather than God‟s ministry, because
thought we take the name of God out focus is more to our own glory. And we become
failure before God and even to people. We should be God‟s perfect workman.
Paul was so much concerned about the imaginary teaching and the believers, so Paul
encouraged Timothy to be truthful and faithful in handling the word of truth even in the
midst of people who failed to understand and spreading wrong notion.

They denied the future resurrection of the body apparently by asserting that the resurrection
was the spiritual awakening experienced at conversion only (2 Tim 2:17-18). Therefore,
Paul repeats the advice of his previous letter that Timothy should not waste time in
discussing fanciful theories (1 Tim 1:3-11), but to be well trained in the word of truth, and
good sound doctrine (1 Tim 4:6-10). And to bring the accurate meaning of what it really
mean for? Paul urged Timothy to remind with the sound doctrine of the word of truth to
those who are going astray from the right teaching of Jesus Christ (2 Tim 2:14), because for
the word is truth is not about human fancy imaginary nor intellectual, but it is a revelation of
Jesus Christ to us (Gal 1:12) “inspired by God” (2 Tim 3:16). Paul emphasis to Timothy
was not to successes but to be committed in God‟s words. So Paul encouraged to handle
God‟s words correctly that “the Lord will give you understanding in everything” (2 Tim
2:7).
In a same way even in today‟s generation many Christians are confusing and shaken in
faith, because of wrong imaginary notions. And now God assigned you and me to be
handled God‟s word correctly. We should be like Timothy in dealing with the sound
doctrine even in the midst of heretical philosophy.
In the era of Timothy, the contradictory teaching was spreading by the believers within the
community. Likewise lately, so many preachers are preaching totally contrary to what the
word of God says. They preach of worldly prosperity, speaking in tongues beyond what
truth demands, and phrase like “if you accept Jesus you will not face sufferings in life”
which is totally wrong teaching. By taking one word or text in the bible they speak and
preach all these wrong teaching. So being a servant of God it is our duty to speak what the
word of God asks us to say. We must be thriving in God‟s words, so that we would be
acceptable before God and would not be ashamed. Our work should be approved by God,
perfect, and integrity of God‟s word.
In closing up I want to post this question. How is your work, does it God approved you as a
workman?
