Stabily analysis of embankment for construction of HLB in Km 26/3 of Rajupalem- Iskapalli

road

Chapter 3 of IRC 75-2015 deals with the stabilty analysid of embankments.

I) Field data
Cross section at KM 26.237
Ground level 98.18
RCL near abutment 109.5
Height of embankment 11.32
Top width of embankment 10 m
Bottom width of embankment 43.96
Angle of internal friction n 360
Cohession of soil n 4.8 T/sqm 48 KN/Sqm
Factor of safety 1.5
Base soil properties
Classification Non plastic
Differential free swell 0.00%
Angle of internal friction n 320
Cohession of soil n 0.6 T/sqm 6 KN/Sqm

A) Baring Capacity of Base soil

As per IS 6403
For general shaer failure n n= 320 7.13
Nc = 35.49 8.2
Nq = 23.18
Ny = 30.22

For Locsl shaer failure n n= 22.710

Nc = 17.71
Nq = 8.41
Ny = 7.89
For mixed shaer failure n= 320
Nc = 26.6
Nq = 15.8
Ny = 19.06
C1 = 4.02
ϒ = 1.85
Qnu=CNc+q(Nq-1)+.5yBNyW'
q= yD
Where D= 0 at the existing ground level
W'= 0.5 for the water table at the ground level
Qnu= 6*26.6+0+0.5*18.5*43.96*19.06*.5
= 4034.78 KN/Sqm
Total additional load due to fill
(10+43.96)/2*11.32*2.02
616.94
Factor of safety= 6.5399877 > 1.5

Hence the soil is safe for bearing the embankment load and ground improvement is not
required

B) Slope stability Analusis

Slope of embankment = 1.5H to 1V
i= 33.690
Trail 1
Assuming FOS= 2
nm =Tan-1((tann )/F) 17.30
Sn = C/(ϒH) = 0.0425
C= 48 Kn/sqm
ϒ = 20.2 Kn/Cum
H = 11.32 m
Fc1 = C/(Snϒ.H)
= 4.94
Trail 2
Assuming FOS= 3
nm =Tan-1((tann)/F) 11.760
Sn = C/(ϒH) = 0.075
C= 48 Kn/sqm
ϒ = 20.2 Kn/Cum
H = 11.32 m
Fc2 = C/(Snϒ.H)
= 2.8

Trail 3
Assuming FOS= 2.9
nm =Tan-1((tann)/F) 12.16
Sn = C/(ϒH) = 0.0725
C= 48 Kn/sqm
ϒ = 20.2 Kn/Cum
H = 11.32 m
Fc3 = C/(Snϒ.H)
II = 2.9
Hence the critical FOS is 2.9>1.5 Hence the slope is stable

RCL = 109.5
Lowest GL = 98.18
Height of embankment 11.32 m
Locattion of centre of slip circle

As per Fellinious, The centre of slip circle is located on line joining P(4.5H, -H) where 0,0 is
location of toe point. The point Q is located with directional angles

The trail 3 has lowest FS which is critical slip circle. Whoes FS is = 2.82
Hence the proposed slope of 1.5H : 1V with proposed material is safe

As seen from the above analysis, for both the methods, FOS is 2.82 and 2.90. Hence the
proposed slope of 1.5H to 1V is safe with the proposed fill material
