Questions 29 - 34
Read the passage below carefully and answer the questions that follow.
One look at him and anyone can see that he is not an ordinary man. There is an
air about him that seems to drive people away from him. He is one of the oldest
residents in the area, about 70 years old but healthy and energetic. No one had
ever seen him visiting anyone or receiving visitors. He is unpredictable in his
movements. He has no fixed times unlike the rest of us. He takes walks at odd
times, like in the mid-afternoon or in the middle of the night. He looks and acts
just like a spooky character in a horror novel.
He is often seen smiling and talking to himself. People have even seen him
laughing aloud as if laughing at some joke he played on himself. He dresses in
black, as if in perpetual mourning. The elders whisper that he has lost someone
dear to him in younger days and had not quite recovered from it.
Like the rest of the children in the neighbourhood. I avoid him. There is no
special reason for this, just the fear of the unknown. In fact I am so afraid of him
that I even cross the road to avoid him.

Questions 38 - 40
Read the short story below and answer the questions that follow.
That afternoon Zahid asked his grandmother for some money. He told her
that it was for buying a book. But when he arrived at the store, his eyes caught
hold of a long, red pencil. Suddenly, he felt sad again and tears rolled down his
cheeks.
No longer did he need a book, or a pencil, or even a ruler. None of these
things could help him. At last, he spotted it - a three-inch pocket knife under the
glass counter. He bought it right away.
The knife would be just what he needed to keep Dolah away from him.
And he might even get more use out of the knife than the pencil. Children are
scared of knives, so he would make the blade as sharp as he could.
He continued going to school, but not to study. His primary victims were
children smaller than himself. He would laugh when they let out a cry or a
scream.
He dumped oil into the aquarium on the class nature table, pulled out the
ferns and bean plants and then sliced up the preserved centipedes and snakes.
A he wanted to be a bully
B he wanted to revenge his injustice
C he wished he was stronger
D he wanted to show off his savings ( )
A protect
B save
C threaten
D kill ( )
40. From the above passage we see that Zahid had become
A mild.
B pleasant.
C heartless
D crazy. ( )
