PROFESSIONAL NURSING PHILOSOPHY 2

Throughout the BSN course I was able to learn about different subjects that will help

guide me to shape and build my own nursing philosophy. With my nursing philosophy I am

hoping that it will help me with my nursing career and help me become a great nurse one day

and with this philosophy I can always go back with it and learn and build more from it as my ca-

reer as a nurse continues to grow.

My own personal nursing philosophy is that based on my own values and beliefs and it is

that when it comes to taking care of an individual, you as a nurse should care for them as a

whole; by using my knowledge and skills, being caring, compassionate and respectful I believe

that I can follow my own philosophy and this is something that I have learned throughout this

course. As health care professionals, we work in a field where we are dealing with patients that

come from different backgrounds and beliefs and just because they are different from me, I

should not care for them any differently and not just focus on their disease itself. I believe it is an

important belief to keep in mind because as nurses I feel like we tend to forget that these are not

just patients, they are people just like us, and they have their own rights, beliefs, etc and by un-

derstanding where they come from it helps us nurses develop a better bond with these patients

and it help improve patient care.

The nursing theory that I believes reflects on my beliefs would be Madeleine Leininger’s

Transcultural Care theory. This theory is based on nursing care that is able to be provided to pa-

tients of different cultural backgrounds and being able to understand where your patients come

from and this can allow us noses to provide the best care as possible. The purpose of this theory

is for the nurses to immerse themselves in the cultural education and allows them to create a care

plan and provide care that is similar to what the patient’s cultural expectations are. (Busher

Betancourt, D. A, 2016). With Leininger’s theory it provides the nurses to gain a sense of cul-

tural competence and by treating the patients like every other patient in the hospital, the nurse

would not be able to provide the best care as possible and they are not treating the patients as a

whole. If the nurses remain insensitive to these cultural differences, the nurses will lose an op-

portunity to achieve the best results and fail to provide the best care as possible. (Busher

Betancourt, D. A, 2016).

Lifelong learning is important, I feel like as nurses there is always something new to

learn and everyday there are new things to be discovered and as health care providers I believe it

is important to be up to date on these current events so that we nurses are able to provide the best

care in the safest ways as possible. As nurses, we are aspire to learn new things and nurses never

stop learning whether it is getting certifications in certain specialities or just continuing their edu-

cation. Even at my current job, I am still learning new skills and new information about diseases

and disorders and I am even learning new information just by having a simple conversation with

my patients, with this it allows me to grow better as a nurse and provide better care for them. I

am currently continuing my education by enrolling in the BSN program but afterwards I do plan

on getting my master’s degree and hoping to find a field that I can specialize in, I want to have

the opportunity to experience other aspects of nursing and this allows me to gain more experi-

ence.

When it comes to personal wellness, this is very important especially for us health care

providers, we should not feel like we are being selfish by taking time for ourselves because we

want to be in a good health so that we’re able to provide care for others. It is important to remind

ourselves that we are also humans too and we will have ours days when we just don’t want to get

out of bed or we just overwork ourselves to the point of just breaking down. So, it is okay to take

some time off for yourself and do what makes you happy and enjoy the company of your love

ones or even enjoy time to yourself. If we are not able to take care of ourselves, we are not well

enough to take of others and this might cause issues in the work place and it can even put patient

safety as risk and even risk your own safety.

Regarding the case study relating to Mr. Orange, with that case study it made me realize

how important QSEN competencies are and how QSEN is used to continuously improve the

quality and safety for the patients. Our patients’s safety is the our number one priority and it is

our job as nurses is to make sure that this happens, we need to be able to recognize these unsafe

conditions and report and act on these issues as soon as possible. What I’ve learned with the Mr.

Orange case study is how important effective and good communication is, and how is it our job

to be the patient’s advocate. Nurses are seen as the “sharp end” of errors in the healthcare field,

because of their proximity and continuity with patient care, we the nurses are the last opportunity

to prevent an error. (“Speak to be heard”, 2017). Due to the lack of communication in the case

study, it caused Mr. Orange’s health to decline and he was not provided with the right treatment,

the nurse taking care of him should have expressed his concerns and pushed forward with the sit-

uation.

From this course I was able to learn about conflict management and how to handle con-

flict in the workplace. A personality test that I took revealed that I had the advocate personality

type and this personality is type is very rare, the Advocate are soft spoken, and strong willed,

they have strong opinions and they will fight for what they believe in. Also, they can find them-

selves fighting again conflict, but advocates will try to avoid them but under certain circum-

stances they will fight back. All in all, the Advocate wants nothing but the best and wants noth-

ing but to help the world but sometimes they tend to not care for themselves and need to re-

charge. I feel like the personality test was accurate about me, I personally think that when it

comes to certain situations I tend to have strong opinions about them and I want to make sure

that my voice is heard when needed. Also, when it comes to conflict I would love to avoid con-

flict at all cost but sometimes there are things you cannot run away from and you just have to

face it head on and it’s much more professional to handle conflict right away rather than pushing

it aside.

Leadership is a good quality to have and a good skill to learn when it comes to being the

health care field. So, what makes a nurse a good leader? A leader is someone who must be com-

mitted to the passion and their purpose and they are able to turn that commitment into persever-

ance.(“Nine principles of successful nursing leadership”, 2017) The most important thing about

being a great leader is their commitment, if there is no commitment then there is no purpose, be-

ing committed to the nurse field you will be able to show off your skills and knowledge and the

workplace. Not only does this benefit you, this will benefit those around you, the staff around

will see the work you’re putting into your work and the efforts it took and the staff will learn and

will motivation them to work as hard and seek these rewards and recognitions as well. Having a

great leader in the workplace can help motivate the staff, enhance the work place, and increase

the quality of care for the patients.

In conclusion, my beliefs and values are the foundations that helped me shaped my nurs-

ing philosophy. I want to be able to provide the best care possible for the patients that I get to

work with and having that opportunity to treat them for who they are and not just for their ill-

nesses. I will always try my best to provide the utmost care and put my patients as my priority

but keep mind about own my wellbeing as well. I am hoping that with my philosophy it will help

guide me throughout my nursing career and I will have always something to look back at that re-

minds me of who I am and what I believe in and how far I have come as a nurse.
