I.

Melting point

(1) Prepare your test compounds (2)* Seal your capillary tubes using heat

(3)* Using the capillary

tubes, obtain small
amounts of the solids
until there is enough
samples inside the tube.
The height of the sample
should be at least 5mm-
6mm

(4)* Place capillary tubes inside the

Thomas Hoover apparatus for the
determination of the melting point.

Switch on the apparatus and adjust

the heat and turn on the stirrer

(5)* Record Temperature for each

trials.

NOTE:

*Allow the silicone fluid to cool down first before performing another test

Purity on Melting Point Range
II. Boiling Point

Obtain a capillary tube

Set-up your and heat it in the middle
thiele tube part until it twists
and fill up
with glycerol

Place your capillary

tube in the micro test
tube containing drops
of your samples

Place the micro test tube beside the

thermometer (use a rubber tubing to
hold the capillary tube)

Immerse the thermometer in the

glycerol and rapidly heat the glycerol
until it produces bubbles

Afterwards, remove the flame and

allow the glycerol to cool down and
as it cools down the liquid will start to
enter the capillary tube. Record the
temperature

To determine the boiling point range,

slowly reheat the test compound
until the liquid comes out of the
capillary tube. Record temperature
