IN CELEBRATION OF LUNAR NEW YEAR 2019
WHEREAS, the Lunar New Year began on February 5, 2019 and is an annual celebration observed by
many Asian-American Palo Altans with gatherings of family, friends and community that promote
heritage and family traditions; and,
WHEREAS, while there are a number of differences between how different cultures celebrate Lunar
New Year, there’s one common theme that they and the entire Palo Alto community, both Asian-
American and non-Asian American, celebrate and embrace: family; and,
WHEREAS, according to 2017 estimates, Asian-Americans make up 31% of the Palo Alto community
and have made significant contributions in all aspects of civic life and are an important part of the
community fabric of Palo Alto; and,
WHEREAS, the Palo Alto Library is hosting its 8th Annual Lunar New Year Festival on February 16,
2019 at the Palo Alto Art Center, which is part of the Palo Alto Library’s “Celebrating Cultures”
initiative to honor the Palo Alto community’s diversity through various programs, services and
collections that reflect Palo Alto and the Greater Bay Area; and,
WHEREAS, community events, like the 8th Annual Lunar New Year Festival, are great opportunities
for the entire Palo Alto community to come together to learn more about and to embrace the rich
cultural diversity of Palo Alto and serve as a reminder of Palo Alto’s commitment to all forms of
diversity and our country’s national moto “E pluribus unum” or “out of many, one”; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Palo Alto Human Relations Commission
do hereby commend and thank the Palo Alto Library, its staff and community partners for organizing
this year’s 8th Annual Lunar New Year Festival and for all that it does throughout the year as part of its
“Celebrating Cultures” initiative; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we send greetings and wishes for good fortune to all Asian-
American Palo Altans and the entire Palo Alto community in the New Year in celebration of Lunar New
Year 2019.
