LETTER ACTIVITY IDEAS
Try these activities for more fun with letters!
Fishing for Sounds – Buy some inexpensive ping pong balls at

a local store. Use permanent marker to write a letter on each
ball. Fill a bucket with water and put the balls in. Ask your
child to “fish” for a letter with a small net (or just his/her
hands), identify the letter, and think of a word that begins
with that letter. Keep fishing!
Hop On It – Use painter’s tape to make letters on the kitchen
floor. Then call out a letter and have your child hop on that
letter. Encourage your child to make the letter sound and
identify a word that begins or ends with that sound. Then call
out another letter and let your child hop on it. For variety,
have your child, stomp, tap, sit, or balance on the letter.
Sticky Letter Search – Use letter stickers or small pieces of
masking tape with various letters written on them. Place them
around your home. Then give your child clues about where to
find certain letters. For example, you might say, “Look for the
letter M near something that shows your reflection. The name
of the object begins with M.” Your child can find the letter on
the bathroom mirror.
Keep It Up Categories – Blow up a balloon and play a game
of keep it up. Ask your child to choose a letter of the
alphabet. Explain that you will have to say a word that begins
with that letter before you hit the balloon each time. If you
cannot think of a word and the balloon touches the ground,
begin again with a new letter.
LETTER ACTIVITY IDEAS
Try these activities for more fun with letters!
Texture Letters – Use a cookie tray and try different textures

like sugar, flour, rice, popcorn kernels or shaving cream. Allow
your child to touch and experiment with the texture. Then use
your finger to make letters. Ask your child to make certain
letters or make your child’s name.
Bean Alphabet – Buy a bag of uncooked white beans. Use a
permanent marker to write a letter on each bean. Include
uppercase and lowercase letters. Place them in a container
and shake them up. Ask your child to pick a letter and find its
lowercase or uppercase match. Use the beans to organize
the alphabet, build simple words, and practice letter sounds.
Letter Drop – Use the beans from the above activity or make
small letter cards with index cards, sticky notes, or paper. Take
a handful and drop them on the ground. Identify a letter and
see how quickly your child can find it. Use the letters to make
words. Drop them again!
On the Go Bingo – Make a simple alphabet chart with all the
letters. Give your child a marker or stamper. While you travel
in the car or on the bus, ask your child to look for letters. As he
or she finds a letter, cross it off or stamp over it. Can you find
all the letters before you reach your destination?

Try these activities for more fun with rhyming words.
Update a Rhyme – Read stories and poems, and listen to

songs with rhyming words. Choose a nursery rhyme and work
with your child to make up your own ending, with rhyming
words. Draw pictures to go with your story. Make a book!
Action Rhymes - Explain that you will say a word and your
child must act out a rhyme for the word. For example, if you
say “sun”, your child can “run” in place. Use words that rhyme
with jog, hop, dance, skip, slide, sit, clap, tap, spin, or lay.
Rhyme Toss – Use a ball, beanbag, large marshmallow, or a
rolled up sock for this game. Stand across from your child and
call out a word as you throw the ball. He or she must catch it
and say a rhyming word before throwing it back to you. For a
challenge, take a step back after each catch.
Game Time Rhymes – As you are playing your child’s favorite
games, encourage rhyming. For example, ask your child to
rhyme color words in Candy Land, number words in Uno, or
shape words in Shape memory.
Silly Rhyming Pictures – As you are practicing rhymes, have
your child choose a favorite rhyming pair and draw a silly
picture to illustrate the rhyme. For example, your child could
draw a pig with a wig, a goose drinking juice, or some ants
wearing pants.

Try these activities for more fun with sorting.
Book of Blue – Work with your child to collect magazine

pictures or other items that are blue (or any color). Glue them
on several pieces of card stock paper and staple them
together to make a book of blue. Look for a blue sticker, a
tag, a tissue, piece of yarn, a bead, and so on.
Starts with S – Brainstorm a list of items that start with the letter
S (or any letter). Help your child write them on a piece of
paper. Give clues about S words for your child to guess. Keep
the list in a notebook and choose a new letter each day.
Add to the list as you discover new words.
Everyday Sort – Engage your child in sorting with everyday
tasks like sorting laundry by color or family member, setting
the table, sorting toys by size or color, and so on. Describe
what your child is doing by saying something like, “I see you
put all the green toy cars in the same row.”
Find Five! – Make a list of 5 items for your child to find around
your home. You may use different categories, like: Things that
are yellow, things that are round, things that start with g,
things that are soft, and so on. For a challenge, do not tell
your child the category. Once he or she finds all the items,
encourage your child to identify what all the items have in
common.

Try these activities for more fun with matching!
Memory Match – Use a deck of playing cards and encourage

your child to find matching numbers with a simple game of
go fish or memory. Choose a small set of cards (10 number
pairs) and place them all face down. Ask your child to flip
two cards at a time. Take turns until he or she finds a match.
Calendar Match – Use an old calendar to practice matching.
Cut out the little pictures on the back and see if your child
can match them to the big pictures.
Every Day Match – Practice matching with everyday tasks like

matching socks, shoes, or mittens. Match toys that are the
same color, silverware that is the same, and so on. Ask
children to find two objects that look the same in some way
(ame color, same size, or same shape).
Sticker Match – Buy a pack of stickers that have two matching

sheets. Give your child one sheet and you take the other
sheet. Place stickers on precut note cards or small pieces of
paper. Place one set on the table or floor. Place the other set
in a hat or paper bag. Have your child pick a card out of the
hat. How quickly can he or she place the card on its match?

Try these activities for more fun with patterns!
Snack Patterns – Make a shish kabob snack with different

kinds of fruit. Have your child make a pattern with cut up
melon, sliced banana, strawberries and grapes. Or, make
patterns around the plate. Encourage children to explain the
pattern then eat it.
Dance Patterns – Explore patterns with actions and music. The
Hokey Pokey and the Chicken Dance are fun patterned
songs for kids. Or, make up your own patterned step routine.
Try hop, twist, shake, hop, twist, shake. What other patterns
can you try?
Artsy Patterns – Cut shapes and make a shape pattern on
paper. Draw patterns with markers or crayons. Make stamp
patterns. Make color patterns with splashes of paint. Cut
squares of different fabrics and ask your child to make a
texture pattern. Cut colored paper into strips and form into a
chain. Can you make a pattern of red, blue, purple, red,
blue, purple chain links?
Sing a Song of Patterns – Show your children how patterns
have a rhythm when you say the name of the pictures aloud.
Encourage your child to make up a pattern of words and sing
it as a silly song. Sing this example,

Try these activities for more fun with sight words!
Park on the Sight Word – Use some toy cars or trucks and
create a sight word parking lot. Write the sight words on
poster board, an empty flat cardboard box, or use sticky
labels on the hard floor. Ask your child to drive his or her car
to the sight word you choose. Or, have your child drive onto a
sight word and read the word.
Decorate a Sight Word – Show your child how to write one of
the sight words in bubble or block letters. Alternatively, print
out one of the sight words in block letters. Ask your child to
decorate the sight words with different colors, lines, shapes,
and collage materials. You can use glitter, yarn, paper
scraps, textures, cotton, or whatever materials you wish. Or,
paint inside the letters. As you work, ask your child to repeat
the word, spell it, and use it in a sentence.
Sight Word Baseball – Create simple sight word flash cards on
note cards or paper squares. Set up 3 bases and home plate.
Your child starts at home plate. You throw a pitch (show your
child a flash card). If he or she can read the word, your child
can advance to 1st base. Continue to show words and allow
your child to advance around the bases.
Keep track of home run points.
Variation: Ask your child to spell the word
instead of reading it in order to advance
around the bases.

SIGHT WORD ACTIVITY IDEAS
Try these activities for more fun with sight words!
Flip the Sight Word – Stick or glue a few sight words on small
paper plates or circles. Give your child a pancake flipper and
ask for a sight word. Your child must use the flipper to lift up
the correct word and bring it to you. If it is correct, allow him
to flip it on the ground or on your head. Variation: ask your
child to balance with it and walk across the room.
Sidewalk Sight Words – Use sidewalk chalk to help your child
write the sight words on the ground. Ask your child to run,
hop, walk, walk backwards, or tiptoe to the correct sight
word. For a challenge, ask your child to run to three sight
words in a particular order. Your child will be practicing many
skills at one time!
Make those Sight Words – Use scrabble tiles, alphabet cereal,
letter noodles, sticker letters, or magazine letters to make the
sight words. Encourage your children to look at the word on a
paper or flash card then find the correct letters to spell out
the word.
Silly Sight Word Sentences – Have your child choose a sight
word and use it in a silly sentence. Your child can say or write
the sentence. The sillier the sentence, the better! Have your
child draw a picture to illustrate the silly sentence. You may
want to continue the fun and make an entire silly story, using
at least one sight word in each sentence.
