1-O INTRODUCTION
The Scott-Alert, Model Sl 01, see figure I-l,
is a microprocessor controlled, self-contained,
portable instrument designed to detect the
presence of Methane Gas in air, and provide a
digital indication of the concentration in per-
cent [O-5%1.

An audible alarm is provided which es activated

when a gas concentration exceeds a pre-set
level, and/or when the battery voltage is low
(the instrument is no longer usable).

A fast pulse rate tone [I 12 second pulse every

second1 indicates a high gas or vapor condition
while a slow pulse rate tone (2 second pulse
every 4 seconds) indicates a low battery condi-
tion. Each time the instrument is turned on, the
audible alarm functions for a l/2 second
duration.

The Instrument is available with the following

factory calibration:

-Methane in Air P/N 40011110

This manual describes the various features,

functions and displays of the Scott-Alert
Model SIOI. The manual should be read and
understood before operation of the instrument.

2
Figure l-l

Portable Gas Detection Instrument

3
The Scott-Alert is designed as a Methane Indi-
cating Detector 6 approved as permissible for
use in gassy mines.

3-O INSTRUMENT DESCRIPTION

The Scott-Alert uses diffusion type plug-in

sensors which do not require aspirator bulbs,
pumps, hoses or probes for operation.

The specially contoured case is high impact

resistant ASS plastic.

The instrument can be hand held or used with

the optional leather carrying case with belt
loop and shoulder strap.

An extension pole is available to place the

instrument in inaccessible areas or confined
space that requires checking before entering.

An earphone accessory is available when utiliz-

ing the instrument in a noisy environment.

Each instrument has a color coded switch

plate for ease of instrument type identification.

Switches have “tactile feel” and “tactile loca-

tion” giving the user a sense of switch actua-
tion as well as position when operated with
gloved hands and/or in poorly illuminated areas.

4
Power is provided with rechargeable nickel
cadmium batteries providing up to 8 hours of
continuous operation without recharging.

The electronics for each instrument are solid

state and are microprocessor controlled pro-
viding “state-of-the-art’design.

The Liquid Crystal Display [LCD1 provides the

digital display of percent lower flammable limit
in air of the specified combustible gas.

The display can be momentarily illuminated for

poorly lighted areas.
The following alarm or operation legends will be
displayed as appropriate:

“ALARM” - Flashing legend indicates a high

gas concentration which exceeds a pre-set
level [factory set at 1.2%)

“LOBAT” - Flashing legend indicates the bat-

teries are low. NOTE: Legend will start to flash
when 10 percent [approximately 1 hour) of
battery life remains. At the end of the useful
battery life the audible alarm will sound, and all
other indications will be blanked.

“FAIL” - Flashing legend indicates a sensor or

electronic failure.

“HOLD”- Legend indicates the”HOLD”switch

has been depressed, and the highest indication
of the sensor will be retained until the instru-
ment is turned off or the “HOLD” switch is
again depressed.

5
As previously stated, an audible alarm is pro-
vided for the following alarm conditions:
“ALARM” - High gas concentrations. The
audible alarm provides a latching fast pulse
rate tone which can only be reset by turning
the instrument OFF and then ON in an atmos-
phere below the pre-set alarm concentration
level.

“LOBAT” - Batteries are low; the instrument

is no longer usable. Alarm provides a slow pulse
rate tone.
“FAIL” - Sensor or electronic failure.

4-O GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

4-1 Unpacking
Remove the instrument from the shipping car-
ton and examine for external damage.
If damage is found, notify your Scott Oistribu-
tor, Sales Representative or the Scott factory
for corrective action to be taken.

4-2 Identification
The Portable Methane Gas Detection Instru-
ments, Model SIOI are identified by the
“Yellow” color coded switch plate.

4-3 Batteries

The instrument is provided with internal nickel

cadmium rechargeable batteries, and batter-
ies must be charged before instrument
operation.

6
BATTERIES MUST BE CHARGED FOR 14
HOURS BEFORE INSTRUMENTOPERATION.
When the batteries are fully charged the
instrument can be continuously operated for
up to 10 hours without recharging.

NOTE: When the instrument has been in stor-

age, it may be necessary to complete one
charge/discharge cycle [audible alarm) before
the maximum of 10 hour continuous operation
can be realized.

4-4 Battery Charger [see figure 4-1 I

Scott manufactures single instrument and
multi-instrument chargers suitable for wail
mounting or bench top use. Chargers are avail-
able for 120 or 240 Va-c, 50160 Hz or 12
Vd-c ppwer sources, each with a 6ft. coiled line
cord and suitable plug. The 12 Vd-c charger
provides a standard cigarette lighter adapter.
A red Light Emitting Diode (LEO) on each
charger indicates when the instrument is
charging.

4-4-l Charger Operation

1. Plug the charger line cord into the correct
power source - see label on the back of the
charger.
2. Insert the instrument (from the top of the
charger1 between the retaining clips until
the instrument is seated against the bottom.
3. The red LEO will now be illuminated when
the instrument and charger are correctly
connected.
