Solution:
Given that,
Power transmitted, P = 4.8 MW = 4.8× 106 W
Frequency, f = 4Hz
Shearing stress, 55 = ×ז106 Pa
Twisting Angle, θ = 2°
Shaft Length, L = 2.5 m
G = 83× 109 Pa
We have to find,
Diameter of Shaft, d =?
As we know that,
T= P/2 π f
T= 4.8× 106 / 2 π (4)
T= 190985.93 Nm
As,
θ= TL× 57.3/JG
J= TL× 57.3/Gθ
π d4/32= (190985.93× 2.5× 57.3) / (83× 109× 2°)
d4= (190985.93× 2.5× 57.3× 32) / (83× 109× 2°× π )
d4= 1.678× 10-3
d= 0.2024 m
or
d= 202.4 mm
The larger diameter d= 260.5 mm satisfy both strength and rigidity by bearing the
stress of 55× 106 Pa. whereas, smaller diameter d= 204.4 mm does not satisfy
the required conditions and can not bear the stress of 55× 106 Pa.

Solution:
Given that,
Diameter, d= 60 mm
G = 30 GPa
We have to find,
Angle of twist of gear A relative to gear D, θA/D =?
Then,
TAB= -900 Nm
TBC= 100 Nm
TCD= -700 Nm
As TAB & TCD are anticlockwise and TBC is in clockwise direction so, we assume
their signs, i.e. positive for clockwise and negative for anticlockwise.
As,
θ= TL (57.3) / JG
In our case,
θA/D =∑TL(57.3)/JG
θA/D = -(TL(57.3)/JG)AB+(TL(57.3)/JG)BC-(TL(57.3)/JG)CD

θA/D= -6.964°
3.The steel shaft shown in figure rotates at 4Hz with 40KW taken off
at A,25 KW removed at B and 65KW applied at C. Using G=83 GPa,
find the maximum shearing stress and the angle of rotation of gear A
relative to gear C?
Solution:
Given that,
Frequency, f =?
Power at A, PA = 40 KW =40000 W
Power at B, PB = 25 KW =25000 W
Power at C, PC = 65 KW =65000 W
Diameter of Steel shaft from A to B, dAB = 55mm = 0.055m
Diameter of Steel shaft from A to B, dBC = 65mm = 0.065m
Length of Steel shaft from A to B, LAB = 4m
Length of Steel shaft from B to C, LBC = 2m
G = 83 GPa
We have to find,
As,
TA= PA/2 π f = 40000/2 π (4) = 1591.55 Nm
3
Muhammad Sajid Nazir Strength Of Materials 2005-CE-38
Then,
TAB= 1591.55 Nm
TBC= 2586.27 Nm
As both TAB & TBC are anticlockwise so, we assume their signs, i.e. positive for
both TAB & TBC.
As,
θ= TL (57.3) / JG
In our case,
θA/c = θA/B + θB/C
θA/c =∑TL(57.3)/JG
θA/c = (TL(57.3)/JG)AB+(TL(57.3)/JG)BC
θA/c =
9 9
(1591.55× 4× 57.3× 32/ π d4× 83×10 )AB+(2586.27× 2× 57.3× 32/π d4× 83×10 )BC
9
θA/c=(1591.55× 4× 57.3× 32/ π (0.055)4× 83×10 )AB+(2586.27× 2× 57.3× 32/π (0.06
9
5)4× 83×10 )BC
θA/c = 4.89+2.04
θA/c = 6.93°
As,
זmax = 16T/π d3
In our case,
זAB = 16T/π d3
זAB = 16× 1591.55/π × (0.055)3
זAB = 48.72× 106 Pa
&
זBC = 16T/π d3
זBC = 16× 2586.27/π × (0.065)3
