Methods of Runoff Computation (10%)
Given date: Sunday, 25 November 2018
Due date: on or before Monday, 24 December 2018

Show your calculations in an organized and neat format. Indicate any

assumptions and /or relevant comments if you have.

1. The rainfall rate for the successive 30 minutes interval up to 3 hr is given as under (2 pt.):

Time (minute) 0 30 60 90 120 150 180

Rainfall intensity (cm/hr) 0 1.6 3.6 5.0 2.8 2.2 1.0

The corresponding surface runoff is estimated to be 3.6 cm and the initial losses are assumed to
be neglected, estimate the Ø and W- index of the storm.

2. Determine the peak runoff rate for 30 years return period to design a gully control structure.
The essential data are as follow (4 pt.):

A. Catchment slope is 0.60%

B. Intensity-return period relationship is used as:

I  5.82T
0.160

(t  0.4)
0.75

Where, I= rainfall intensity for the duration equal to time of concentration (cm/min)
T= return period (years)
t= time (minute)
C. Length of longest water course is 1500 m
D. Catchment area is 15 km2
E. Runoff coefficient for the catchment is 0.55

3. Determine the runoff from a catchment area of 100 ha for a 15 year return period, during
which the maximum rainfall was recorded as 10 cm in 6 hr duration. The catchment area has
two parts, in which one of 25 ha is under pasture range contoured with poor hydrologic
condition and the remaining one is under small grain on straight row farming practice with
poor hydrologic condition. The soil of catchment is related to group-B. The initial abstraction
of catchment is rated as Ia= 0.3S (4 pt.)
