Abstract

The emergence of Google Glass, a prototype for a transparent Heads-Up

Display (HUD) worn over one eye, is significant. It is the first
conceptualization of a mainstream augmented reality wearable eye
display by a large company. This paper argues that Glass’s birth is not
only a marketing phenomenon heralding a technical prototype, it also
argues and speculates that Glass’s
popularization is an instigator for the adoption of new paradigm in huma
n-computer interaction, the wearable eye display. Google Glass is
deliberately framed in media as the brainchild of Google co-founder
Sergey Brin . Glass’s process of adoption operates in the context of
mainstream and popular culture discourses, such as the Batman myth, a
phenomenon that warrants attention. The emergence of Google Glass, a
prototype for a transparent Heads-Up Display (HUD) worn over one eye,
is significant on several levels. It is the first conceptualization of a main
stream augmented reality wearable eye display playing out in a viral
marketing campaign. Google Glass will enable us to capture video, let us
interact with personal contacts, and navigate maps, amongst other
things.

What’s Google Glass

Google Glass is Google's wearable computer that a person wears like a

regular pair of prescription glasses. Google Glass is best described as an
evolution of the smartphone — a way to freely access data without
needing to look at a handheld device. A "heads-up display" suspended
slightly above your eye places data right in your field of vision, without
completely obstructing your view.

In 2013, the device became available for beta testing to lucky applicants
who were selected based on their proposal for how to use the device
and were willing to purchase it for $1,500. Google Glass is slated for
commercial release in 2014, and continues to undergo hardware and
interface changes.

The technology was designed to be as convenient as possible, allowing

you to see the projected screen without it blocking your vision. It was
intended to give you all of the benefits of a smartphone, without the
need to hold the device up where you can see it. Google Glass allows
you to browse the Internet, obtain directions to locations, send text
messages, take pictures and more, all from a simple and compact
device.
Google Glass is a brand of smart glasses – an optical head-mounted
display designed in the shape of a pair of eyeglasses. It was developed
by X (previously Google X) with the mission of producing a ubiquitous
computer .Google Glass displayed information in a smartphone-like,
hands-free format. Wearers communicated with the Internet via natural
language voice commands.

Google started selling a prototype of Google Glass to qualified "Glass

Explorers" in the US on April 15, 2013, for a limited period for $1,500,
before it became available to the public on May 15, 2014. It had an
integral 5 Megapixel still/720p video camera. The headset received a
great deal of criticism and legislative action due to privacy and safety
concerns.
Google Glass
Specifications
Overall Specification
Google advertises Glass as an almost science-fiction experience, though
the hardware it contains is actually quite modest. The projected display
is set to a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels, which is on the low side for
mobile devices. The built-in camera can take pictures at a 5-megapixel
quality and records videos at 720p, in line with lower-end smartphones.

One significant issue with Google Glass is its battery life. Early reviews
reported that the device lasts only about 5 hours with average use — for
instance, reading emails, and shooting short videos and some photos.
Taking longer videos or using Glass for longer periods drained the
battery even more quickly.

Google Glass is equipped with 16GB of flash storage and syncs with
Google Drive in the cloud for added accessibility to the photos and
videos you take. Google Glass also comes with a micro USB port for
transferring files and charging the device.

The frame is lightweight and, according to Google, very robust, though it

comes with replacement nose pads for any accidental breaking. Phone
calls and other sounds are produced through bone-conduction transfer,
or by passing vibrations directly to your skull to transmit sound to your
ears.
Technical specifications
The Explorer's LCoS display is illuminated using sequential color LEDs
that pass through a polarization conversion system, a polarizing beam
splitter, a half-silvered mirror, and an anastigmatic, collimating reflector

Features

Google Glass can be controlled using the touchpad built into the side of
the device

Touchpad: A touchpad is located on the side of Google Glass, allowing

users to control the device by swiping through a timeline-like interface
displayed on the screen. Sliding backward shows current events, such as
weather, and sliding forward shows past events, such as phone calls,
photos, circle updates, etc.

Camera: Google Glass has the ability to take 5 Mp photos and record
720p HD video.

Display: The Explorer version of Google Glass uses a liquid crystal on

silicon (LCoS)(based on an LCoS chip from Himax), field-sequential color
system, LED illuminated display. The display's LED illumination is first P-
polarized and then shines through the in-coupling polarizing beam
splitter (PBS) to the LCoS panel. The panel reflects the light and alters it
to S-polarization at active pixel sensor sites. The in-coupling PBS then
reflects the S-polarized areas of light at 45° through the out-coupling
beam splitter to a collimating reflector at the other end. Finally, the out-
coupling beam splitter (which is a partially reflecting mirror, not a
polarizing beam splitter) reflects the collimated light another 45° and
into the wearer's eye.

Speaker: Google glasses are designed to be hands free wearable

device that can be used to make or receive calls too. So a speaker is also
designed by the ear.
Button: A single button on the side of the frame sophisticates the
glasses to work with the physical touch input.

Microphone: A microphone is also put in, that can take the voice
commands of the wearer of user. This microphone is also used for
having telephonic communication. On April 15, 2013, Google released
the Mirror API, allowing developers to start making apps for Glass. In the
terms of service, it is stated that developers may not put ads in their
apps or charge fees, a Google representative told The Verge that this
might change in the future.

Many developers and companies have built applications for Glass,

including news apps, facial recognition, photo manipulation, and sharing
to social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter.

On May 16, 2013, Google announced the release of seven new apps,
including reminders from Evernote, fashion news from Elle, and news
alerts from CNN. Following Googles XE7

Glass Explorer Edition update in early July 2013, evidence of a "Glass

Boutique", a store that will allow synchronization to Glass of Glassware
and APKs, was noted.

Version XE8 made a debut for Google Glass on August 12, 2013. It brings
an integrated video player with playback controls, the ability to post an
update to Path, and lets users save notes to Evernote. Several other
minute improvements include volume controls, improved voice
recognition, and several new Google Now cards.
WORKING
How does it Work…?

The device will probably communicate with mobile phones through Wi-
Fi and display contents on the video screen as well as respond to the
voice commands of the user.

Google put together a short video demonstrating the features and apps
of Google glasses. It mainly concentrates on the social networking,
navigation and communication.

The video camera senses the environment and recognizes the objects
and people around.
The whole working of the Google glasses depends upon the user voice
commands itself. The Explorer Edition receives data through Wi-Fi, or it
can tether via Bluetooth an Android device or iPhone, and use its 3G or
4G data; the Glass also has a GPS chip. Users issue voice commands by
first saying "ok glass", followed by the command, or they can scroll
through the options using a finger along the side of the device.

 take a picture
 record a video
 get directions to...
 send a message to...

Powered by voice control:

So no keyboards Google Glass overlay the world you see around you
with related information beamed onto your retina by a prism that
receives from a tiny projector inside the lens. You see both the physical
world and all relevant data associated with it, the kind of data that right
now. In the relative stone age of PCs, tablets and smartphones, sits on a
separate database somewhere, waiting for you to connect the dots.

With Google Glasses, the technology disappears from in front of you and
you get data and applications in the context of what you're doing or
what you're looking at. Want to know the weather right now? You won't
have to find the weather app and click on it to get a report.

Weather apps for Google Glass will know when you're looking up at the
clouds and provide you with an instant weather report.
Advantages of Google
Glasses

1. The first and the foremost advantage of Google Glasses is that it

offers convenience. Users can easily send messages without using their
hands.

2. Google Glass will show you text messages as well as emails you
receive and allow you to reply to them via voice commands.

3. Multiple options are made available which allows the user to use
either voice commands or small hand gestures for operating this
amazing device.

4. Another main advantage of Google Glasses is that you can capture

those amazing moments of your life in a very simple and easy way. The
video and camera capabilities that offered are hi-class.

5.This user friendliness and freedom is one of the USPs of this project.

6. This is a neat feature that may come in handy when you travel
abroad. You simply need to ask Google Glass to translate a phrase or
sentence from one language to another and it will speak that out.

7. The sound creation takes place with the help of vibrations which is
considered as less abrasive as compared to headphones. This is also
called as Bone-Induction concept. The clarity of the sound is also pretty
good as compared to normal headphones or speakers.
Disadvantages of
Google Glasses

1. Google Glass cannot be used by those people who already having

some issue with their eyes and wears glasses in their daily routine.

2. You cannot use these Google Glass while driving, as the picture, video
or data will be in front of the eyes of the user, which can distract them.

3. Google Glass can be easily broken as it is a sensitive device, after all

it’s a glass not a bullet proof glass.

4. The face recognition technology can be easily misused and it might

turn out to be offensive for that person.

5. One of the main disadvantages of Google Glasses is that there is

chance of breach in the privacy of the person who is using this device.
The video and camera can be misused and anybody can capture
anything without letting the other person know about it.

6. Common glass are even not wearable while Running, Dancing or

similar activities. So would you expect that you can wear these sensitive
glasses.

7. Google glasses that are of consumers concerns are the cost of the
glasses, the track pad, social interactions, privacy and recording issues,
and more.
FUTURE SCOPE

Google Glass is as futuristic a gadget we’ve seen in recent times.

It’s limited in scope right now. The future, Google believes, is
bright and the device itself is “incredibly compelling”.
Google is trying their hardest to push the Project Glass through
the FCC this year.
Reports show that Google is trying to get the approval by the
FCC this year but there are already several hundred glasses
made for testing internally.
Google glasses are basically wearable computers that use the
evolving familiar technologies that brings the sophistication and
ease of communication and informationaccess even for the
physically challenged class of people those literally could not use
general way of palmtops and mobile.
Conclusion

While preparing the presentation on “GOOGLE

GLASS” we learn about the history of google glass,
its working and its contribution to the modern
world.
The basic idea of the presentation is to enhance the
knowledge about the latest technologies and I
studied about Google glass to do the same. I learnt
about the invention of glass, its features and its
positive and negative effects on our society. Google
glass is a good device for various purposes like to
take photo, to record video and most importantly in
Google driverless car. So, it may be called as the
glass to see the modern world or glass
of future vision.
