Power System
Power System
Power system is defined as network of

one or more generating units, power
transmission lines and loads
including the associated equipments
connected to it.
Power System Stability
Power system stability is the ability of the
electric power system, for a given initial
operating condition, to regain a state of
operating equilibrium after being subjected
to a physical or electrical disturbance, with
system variables bounded so that practically
the entire power system remains intact.

Need for Classification of PSS
• Because of high dimensionality and complexity of stability
problems, classification helps to make simplifying
assumptions to analyze specific types of problems using
an appropriate degree of detail of system representation
and appropriate analytical techniques.
• Analysis of stability, including identifying key factors that
contribute to instability and devising methods of
improving stable operation.
• A clear understanding of different types of instability and
how they are interrelated is essential for the satisfactory
design and operation of power systems.
• Classification, therefore, is essential for meaningful
practical analysis and resolution of power system stability
problems.

Rotor Angle Stability
• Rotor angle stability refers to the ability of synchronous machines of an
interconnected power system to remain in synchronism after being
subjected to a disturbance. Term Dynamic Stability is also used for rotor
angle stability.
• Rotor angle instability occurs due to angular swings of some generators

leading to their loss of synchronism with other generators.
• It depends on the ability to maintain/restore equilibrium between

electromagnetic torque and mechanical torque of each synchronous
machine in the system.
• A fundamental factor in this problem is the manner in which the power

outputs of synchronous machines vary as their rotor angles change.
Small Signal Stability
• Small signal stability is concerned with the ability of the
power system to maintain synchronism under small
disturbances.
• Disturbances are continually occurring in the PS due to
continuous variation of load and generation.
• The disturbances are considered to be sufficiently small
that linearization of system equations is permissible for
purposes of analysis.
• Small signal stability studies is of the order of 10 to 20
seconds following a disturbance.
Transient stability
• It is concerned with the ability of the power system to
maintain synchronism when subjected to a severe
disturbance, such as a short circuit on a transmission
line.
• The resulting system response involves large excursions

of generator rotor angles and is influenced by the
nonlinear power-angle relationship
• The time frame of interest is usually 3 to 5 seconds

following the disturbance and may extend to 10–20
seconds for very large systems.
Voltage Stability
• Voltage stability refers to the ability of a PS to maintain steady

voltages at all buses in the system after being subjected to a
disturbance from a given initial operating condition.
• It depends on the ability to maintain equilibrium between demand

and supply from the PS.
• Instability may be in the form of a progressive fall or rise of voltages

of some buses.
• A possible outcome of voltage instability are

loss of load in an area.

systems leading to cascading outages.
Large Disturbance Voltage Stability
• It refers to the system’s ability to maintain steady voltages

following large disturbances such as system faults, loss of
generation, or circuit contingencies.
• This ability is determined by the system and load

characteristics, and the interactions of both continuous and
discrete controls and protections.
• The study period of interest may extend from a few

seconds to tens of minutes.
Small Disturbance Voltage Stability
• It refers to the system’s ability to maintain steady voltages

when subjected to small perturbations such as incremental
changes in system load.
• This form of stability is influenced by the characteristics of
loads, continuous controls, and discrete controls at a given
instant of time.
• This concept is useful in determining, at any instant, how the
system voltages will respond to small system changes.
• The time frame of interest for this voltage stability problems
may vary from a few seconds to tens of minutes.
Rotor Angle Stability vs. Voltage Stability
• Rotor angle stability is basically a generator

stability while voltage stability means load
stability.
• Rotor angle stability is mainly interlinked to

real power transfer whereas voltage
stability is mainly related to reactive power
transfer.
Frequency Stability
• Frequency stability refers to the ability of a power system

to maintain steady frequency following a severe system
upset resulting in a significant imbalance between
generation and load.
• Instability that may result occurs in the form of sustained
frequency swings leading to tripping of generating units
and/or loads.
• Severe system upsets generally result in large excursions of
frequency, power flows, voltage, and other system
variables, thereby invoking the actions of processes,
controls, and protections that are not modeled in
conventional transient stability or voltage stability studies.
