Dear Student,
Please read the section on assignments in the Programme Guide for Elective Courses that we sent you
after your enrolment. A weightage of 30 per cent, as you are aware, has been earmarked for continuous
evaluation, which would consist of one tutor-marked assignment for this course. This assignment is in
this booklet.
Instructions for Formating Your Assignments
Before attempting the assignment please read the following instructions carefully.
1) On top of the first page of your answer sheet, please write the details exactly in the following format :
ROLL NO.:………………………….
NAME:………………………….
ADDRESS:………………………….
…………………………..
…………………………..
…………………………..
COURSE CODE:………………………….
COURSE TITLE:………………………….
ASSIGNMENT NO.:………………………
2) Use only foolscap size writing paper (but not of very thin variety) for writing your answers.
3) Leave a 4 cm. margin on the left, top and bottom of your answer sheet.
5) While solving problems, clearly indicate which part of which question is being solved.
6) The assignment is valid up to only March, 2014. If you fail in this assignment or fail to submit it by
March, 2014, you have to get the assignment for the July 2014 cycle and submit it as per the
instructions given in the programme guide.
1. Which of the following statements are true? Give reasons for your answers. (This means that if
you think a statement is false, give a short proof or an example that shows it is false. If it is true,
give a short proof for saying so. For instance, to show that ‘1, padma, blueis a set’ is true, you
need to say that this is true because it is a well-defined collection of 3 objects.)
2a) Apply Ferrari’s method, followed by Cardano’s method, to solve x42x3x2+2x=0. (12)
b) Find the roots of 32x4144x3+214x2117x+18=0 given that the sum of two of its roots equals the
sum of the other two roots. (6)
c) Obtain a polynomial over R with least degree, having 2i3 as a root. (2)
3a) A firm with 3 retail stores has 10 TVs, 15 stereos and 12 recorders in the first store; 20 TVs, 14
stereos and 5 recorders in the second store; and 25 TVs, 15 stereos and 7 recorders in the third
store. Express the present inventory in matrix form. (3)
b) Find the determinant of 2A, where A is the matrix obtained in 3(a) above. (4)
c) Explain why Cramer’s rule can be applied for solving the following system of equations. Also apply
the rule to obtain the solution.
6x5y3z = 0
x+12y4+2z = 0
2y+8z+23x = 0 (8)
(Note : Make sure you verify your solution.)
4a) Represent the set V of vowels of the English alphabet, the set F of integral factors of 15 and the set
M of non-negative multiples of 3 by the property method as well as the listing method. Also
represent them in a single Venn diagram. What universal set did you choose?
Further, give two distinct ways of representing the empty set using some or all three of these sets.
(11)
b) Prove the absorption law, for any two sets A and B. (5)
c) The successor of the set A is defined to be Find the successors of {1,2} and
{5,{ }}. (4)
b) Obtain the 5th roots of 4+3i. Also show them in an Argand diagram. (5)
d) If det (A) = a+ib, then what is det(iA), where A is a 33 matrix? (2)
6a) The following equations give the quantity supplied (Qs) and quantity demanded (Qd) at the price (P)
for the related markets of two products A and B. The equilibrium price is obtained when Qs = Qd for
each. Find the equilibrium conditions for each market, using the substitution method.
