ELEMENTS
(Identify what is asked for in each number)
1. Main characters
There are a lot of characters in this story but the main character is Lyda. In my opinion, She was
both protagonist and antagonist characteristic because the story happened by Lyda’s perspective
so it would have good and bad thinking. For example, she thinks that the man who sacrifices the
seat for her is very good man. However, her perspective with the sick man was bad. This main
character also the type of static because of her mind set and she does not change anything in the
last of the story.
2. Setting
The situation of the story happened around the afternoon because Lyda wanted to go back home.
The background was set in poor country where had several problem such as traffic jam and poor
pollution. The writer sets the story in Manilla, Philippines early 1940s during the world war.
3. Plot Summary
Lyda took the bus to go back home. Along the way, she feel upset and found many situation that
were good and bad and also poor and rich. she think that life is difficult, everyone is not the same.
4. Type of Conflict
The type of conflict in this story is Man vs Herself because Lyda reacted to the different situation
by different feeling. Sometimes, she strictly followed her mind set. The story moved by her
perspective.
The writer want to represent the general human nature (selfish). She want to show the reader
about people perspective and problem in their life.
6. POINT OF VIEW
It’s the 3rd point of view because the story was told by only Lyda perspective. It also omniscient
because it show the story by narration technique. The reader was trapped in the main
character’s mind. We only know the other character by Lyda thought.
PLOT LINE
(BRIEFLY explain what is asked for in each number)
2. RISING ACTION
A. Do you find the series of events easy to follow? Why or Why not?
No, the series in this story do not easy to follow because the writer wrote the story in to
narration and use the 3rd person to explain. Moreover, the narrator used the main character to
tell the story by comparing between bus rider and human life that hard to understand. Also the
word is hard to understand
In my opinion, there’s no interesting event in this part because everything that happened in the
story are so simple. In this part, Lyda just think about people around her in the bus and nothing
happened.
C. Identify ONE figure of speech or idiom used by the writer in this part of the plot, and explain its
meaning.
Idiom that I found in the story is “Life is so difficult”. It mean the real problem of life that can
happens in everyone’s life. The writer used illness man who cough to Lyda to represent the hard
event that make Lyda feel irritate. In contrast, she can’t show her bad mood because she knew
the true reason about that man(he will have a baby so he can not stop to work even if he sick).
