ABSTRACT
In this paper, the use of concrete-filled steel tubes (CFST) in various structural elements of bridges
emphasized. This study aimed at investigating the benefits of CFST members in Trusses, Arch bridges,
girder bridges and Pier substructures. In CFST, the surrounding steel tube provides effective
confinement to the filled-in concrete and in turn, the concrete helps to reduce the potential local
buckling of the steel tube resulting improved seismic resistant performance. CFST become popular
because of their excellent seismic resistance structural properties such as high strength, high
ductility and large energy absorption capacity. General information of span, structural types and some
key features in structural elements analysed based on the statistical data from various studies. Few typical
bridges presented as case studies. It will provide ample references of CFST usage in bridges for all the
stakeholders in bridge construction. At last, the use of CFST in India is prospected.
