Admission Procedure for Foreign Students

Admission Criteria:

(I) For undergraduate students :

Foreign nationals interested in pursuing their undergraduate studies at IIT Bombay i.e.
B.Tech., Dual Degree & 5-year Integrated M.Sc. programs, have to appear for the Joint
Entrance Examination conducted by the IITs. For more details, please visit :

(II) For postgraduate students :

Foreign Nationals can seek admission to various Postgraduate and Research Programmes under
the following categories:-

Self-financing Students (Full programe)


Cultural Exchange Fellowship Programmes(Govt. Of India)

(III) Visiting students - under Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) / not under


Memorandum of Understanding (Non MoU) :

Foreign nationals registered for a degree in the Institute / University abroad can seek admission
as a visiting student to carry out course work and / or project work at IIT Bombay.

Foreign Nationals seeking admission in any one of the aforesaid categories will have to satisfy
the minimum eligibility criteria for admission to the programmes as prescribed by the Institute.

Admission Procedure:

(I) For undergraduate students :

(II) For postgraduate programmes (M.Tech., M.Phil., M.Des.) under Self-financed


category :

The Foreign Students, who wish to join under Self-financed Category are required to submit
their application to the Academic Office. These applications are scrutinized by the respective
department of IIT Bombay. The respective student / Embassy (with a copy to the student
concerned) will be informed about the Institute decision.

(III) Foreign Students with ICCR Scholarship (Government of India)


Candidates desirous of admission under this Fellowship Programme are required to apply
through the Indian High Commission/Embassy as the case may be, in their respective
Countries. They will send the application to ICCR Government of India and then ICCR will
forward the application/s to various University / Institute in India as the case may be for
consideration. In case the applicant is found suitable for admission, admission offer letter will
be sent to him/her through Indian Council for Cultural Relations, New Delhi.

(IV) Visiting students (Under MoU / Non-MoU)

Foreign Nationals registered for a degree in the Institute/University abroad can carry out
course work and / or project work at IITB for a period of not exceeding two semesters as
visiting students under the MoU or otherwise. Admission of foreign Nationals Under the MoU
will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions spelt out in the MoU agreed to
between IITB and the Country/University/Institution concerned. The list of the institutions with

Visa requirements :

Students admitted to the Institute for all Masters level programmes or as visiting sents
must have a Student Visa. Students admitted for Ph.D. programmes must have a Research
Visa.

The Academic Rules & Regulations applicable to Indian students with regard to eligibility and
evaluation are applicable to Foreign Students also; as outlined in the brochures (please see :

Medical Facilities:

It is advisable that you get a general check up done before departure, to ensure that you do not
suffer from any major ailments.

(I) Full programme students :

You will be provided with full medical facilities as applicable to Indian students at IITB.

(II) Visiting students :

You will be provided with only OPD facility at the IIT Bombay Hospital. You should obtain a
personal insurance policy, covering sickness and accidents before leaving home country.

2) Copy of the grade transcripts with the explanation of the assigned grades.
3) Statement of purpose.
4) Bio-Data / Curriculum vitae / Resume
5) Financial undertaking (to be sent to the Office of Dean-IR) :

­ A letter of recommendation from the Govt. certifying that the fees will be paid by the
Govt., or
­ A copy of the student’s bank statement showing a balance of US $ 10000 (in case of
the 2-yr. post graduate program) or US $ 20000 (in case of a Ph.D. program)

6) Personal particulars of Foreign Scholars coming to India (format provided at the end of
this file)

7) Three recommendation letters – atleast one recommendation should be about the


student’s academic performance issued by a faculty member.

8) Documentary proof to illustrate fluency in English language.

If English is not the first language or language of medium of instruction (during secondary &
tertiary education), a pass in any of the following two tests will be required:-

1. The Test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL), administered by the Educational


Testing Service in the US, in which scores of at least 580 overall and 4.0 in the Test of
Written English are required. The computer based test requires scores of atleast 240 overall
and 4.0 in essay writing. The internet based test requires scores of atleast 95 overall with a
minimum score of 20 in writing.

2. The International English Language Testing Service(IELTS) test, administered by the


British Council, in which scores of 6 or more in each section and an overall score of
6.5 are required.
3. Test scores more than two years old will not be accepted for consideration.

9) Copy of the passport (page showing your nationality and personal details).

Issues after the foreign students (full programme) join the Institute :-

Payment of Fees:-

The fee structure for the visiting students is in US Dollars (USD) and for full programme
students, it is a combination of USD & Indian Rupees (INR).

The dollar payments can be made in any of the following ways:-

1. Travellers cheques / Bankers cheques / Demand Draft in USD or equivalent in INR


in favour of “ Registrar, IIT Bombay”.

2. In cash only in INR

In case the payment is made in INR, the following exchange rate* will be applied :-
For the students joining in the Autumn semester, rate as on 1st June will be applied for
the entire semester.

For the students joining in the Spring semester, rate as on 1st December will be applied
for the entire semester.

In cases where the fees are being wire transferred to IIT Bombay by the sponsoring
institution, the full amount of the fees should be credited to the Institute. Bank charges, if
any, should be borne by the sender.

• The exchange rate to be charged will be intimated by the Office of Dean-IR to the Cash
section and Academic office. Arriving students are requested to find the exchange rate
from the Office of Dean-IR.

Visiting students :

5) A signed undertaking from the student on plain paper wherein they certify that they
will bear all the charges including the tuition fees, accommodation & food charges and
all other incidental charges during the course of their stay at IIT Bombay.
6) Personal Particulars of Foreign Scholars coming to India. (format provided at the end
of this file)
7) A Bonafide certificate from the Home University certifying that you are the student of
the University & they have no objection in your studying at IIT Bombay.
8) 2 recommendation letters from the faculty
9) Documentary proof to illustrate fluency in English language.

Issues after the foreign students (Visiting) join the Institute :-

(1) Rules regarding academic visitorsship of students :

The student should follow the IITB Academic calendar and have to complete the adjustment
of courses as per the prescribed deadline. No requests after this deadline will be considered.

Minimum no. of credits to be taken in a semester – 15 credits


Maximum no. of credits that can be taken in a semester - 40 credits
Grade card will be issued only if the student has registered accordingly and has appeared for
the exams.

(2) Payment of Fees:-

The fee structure for the visiting students is in US Dollars (USD) and for full programme

(3) Fees for half- term courses by visiting students:-

Even if the courses are half-term courses, the fees would be charged considering it as one
course (per course per semester fees will be applied).

E) In addition to the above, every student has to pay Semester Mess Advance of
Rs.10,000/- (every semester), Refundable Mess Advance of Rs. 2000/-(at the
time of joining) and Rs. 1000/- towards Bus pass (per year).
(These are approximate amounts. The actual amounts will be communicated to the students by
the respective hostels at the time of joining).

Foreign Students selected for Ph.D. Programme at IIT Bombay having EXCELLENT
academic credentials can opt for doing academic/ administrative duties in the Dept/Academic
unit to a extent of 8 hours per week to avail a “Fee Waiver “ in Tuition Fees. However if they
fail to perform the duties to the satisfaction of the supervising faculty member's they has to
forgo the fee waiver granted to them and has to pay the full Tuition fees.

The Tuition fees applicable to such students is USD 150 (instead of USD 2000).

Fees reduction will be granted initially for an academic year, Based on the performance
in the course work, and subject to maintaining of a CPI of 8 , the waiver will be extended for
the subsequent academic year. It will be the responsibility of the concern student to apply to the
Departmental Post Graduate Committee (DPGC)/Inter–Disciplinary Programme Committee
(IDPC) in the subsequent years for consideration for continuation of the fee waiver. Further
extensions to the waiver will be decided every year based on th APS report of the students.

2)Visiting students :
