The Secret (Lyric Version)

I met God in the morning
When the day was at its best
And His presence came like sunrise
Like glory in my breast
All day long His presence lingered
All day long He stayed with me
And we sailed in perfect calmness
O’er a very troubled sea
Other ships we’re blown asunder
Other ships we’re sore distressed
But the winds that drove them
Brought me peace and perfect rest
Then I thought of other mornings
With a keen remorse of mind
When I too loosed the mooring
With his Presence left behind

So my friend I share the secret

Learned from many a troubled way
You must seek Him in the morning
If you want Him though the day
Other ships may blow asunder
Other ships may be distressed
But the winds that drive them
Will bring you peace and rest
But the winds that drive them
Will bring you peace and rest
They will bring you peace and rest

The Secret (Poem Version)

by: Ralph Spaulding Cushman
I met God in the morning,
When my day was at its best
And His presence came like sunrise,
Like a glory in my breast.
All day long the Presence lingered;
All day long He stayed with me;
And we sailed in perfect calmness
O’er a very troubled sea.
Other ships were blown and battered,
Other ships were sore distressed,
But the winds that seemed to drive them
Brought to us a peace and rest.
Then I thought of other mornings,
With a keen remorse of mind.
When I too had loosed the moorings
With the Presence left behind.
So, I think I know the secret,
Learned from many a troubled way;
You must seek Him in the morning
If you want Him through the day.

What God Hath Promised

By: Annie Johnson Flint
God hath not promised skies always blue,
Flower-strewn pathways all our lives through;
God hath not promised sun without rain,
Joy without sorrow, peace without pain.
God hath not promised we shall not know
Toil and temptation, trouble and woe;
He hath not told us we shall not bear
many a burden, many a care.
God hath not promised smooth roads and wide,
Swift, easy travel, needing no guide;
Never a mountain rocky and steep,
Never a river turbid and deep
But God hath promised strength for the day,
Rest for the labor, light for the way,
Grace for the trials, help from above,
Unfailing sympathy, undying love

Luke 10:21
In that hour Jesus rejoiced in Spirit and said,
“I thank Thee, O Father, Lord of Heaven and earth,
that Thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent,
and hast revealed them unto babes.
Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Thy sight.

Dare To Say No
Think of the wrecks upon life’s ocean tossed,
For answering, “Yes,” without counting the cost.
Dare to say, “NO,” when you’re tempted to drink,
Pause for a moment, my brave boy, and think:
Think of the mother who bore you in pain;
Think of her tears that will fall like rain;
Think of her heart, how cruel the blow;
Think of her love, and at once say, “NO.”

Think of the hopes that are drowned in the bowl;

Think of the danger to body and soul;
Think of the sad lives once pure as the snow;
Look at them now, and at once say, “NO.”
Think of the manhood and rum-tainted wrecks;
Think of its end and the terrible death;
Think of the homes now shadowed with woe;
They might have been Heaven had the answer been “NO.”

Think of the graves unwept and unknown,

Think of the little ones, cursed before born;
Think of the proud forms now forever laid low,
That might still be here had they learned to say, “NO.”
Think of the demon that lurks in the bowl
Seeking to destroy both body and soul.
Think of all this as through life’s journey you go,
And when you with liquor are tempted, dare to say, “NO.”

Sermons We See
By: Edgar Guest
I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day;
I'd rather one should walk with me than merely tell the way.
The eye's a better pupil and more willing than the ear,
Fine counsel is confusing, but example's always clear;
And the best of all the preachers are the men who live their creeds,
For to see good put in action is what everybody needs.
I soon can learn to do it if you'll let me see it done;
I can watch your hands in action, but your tongue too fast may run.
And the lecture you deliver may be very wise and true,
But I'd rather get my lessons by observing what you do;
For I might misunderstand you and the high advise you give,
But there's no misunderstanding how you act and how you live.

When I see a deed of kindness, I am eager to be kind.

When a weaker brother stumbles and a strong man stays behind
Just to see if he can help him, then the wish grows strong in me
To become as big and thoughtful as I know that friend to be.
And all travelers can witness that the best of guides today
Is not the one who tells them, but the one who shows the way.
One good man teaches many, men believe what they behold;
One deed of kindness noticed is worth forty that are told.
Who stands with men of honor learns to hold his honor dear,
For right living speaks a language which to every one is clear.
Though an able speaker charms me with his eloquence, I say,
I'd rather see a sermon than to hear one, any day.

The Story of Kate Shelley

Kate was 15 on the night of July 6, 1881, when a
big rainstorm hit near Honey Creek in the Des
Moines River Valley in Iowa.
On that night, Kate was up late and heard a work
locomotive tumble off the Honey Creek bridge into
the water. Kate's father, who had died in 1878,
had been a section man for the Chicago &
Northwestern (C&NW), so Kate understood
railroad operations.

Risking her life, Kate made her way across the

broken parts of the bridge in the storm and the
dark. The lantern she was carrying blew out, and
she could do nothing for the train crew of the
locomotive that now was at the mercy of the
waters below. Instead, she hurried on to the
Moingona depot because she knew the Midnight
Limited, full of passengers, was on its way.
