6th Grade Classroom Disclosures
Hello!
I am so excited to be your child’s 6th grade teacher this year. I look forward to getting to know each one of my
students, both academically as well as personally. I am committed to seeing that every student has a fun, productive
school year that is filled with growth in every academic area and as individuals. This year will see the end of their
elementary journey. I am delighted, and honored, to be on board so that I can participate in this leg of their academic
travels.
Language Arts/Reading: Students will continue to develop language to effectively communicate through listening,
speaking, viewing, writing, and presenting. They will continue to strengthen their fluency, vocabulary,
comprehension, analytical and critical thinking skills. We will utilize a large range of resources for cross-curriculum
development in all of our core areas. Students will be expected to complete daily assignments, and to take grade
level assessments to check for understanding. Our main resource will include our new ELA curriculum, Pearson’s
“My Perspectives,” and four novels.
Math: Students will increase their understanding of the four basic arithmetic operations applied to whole numbers,
fractions, decimals, and algebraic models. They will locate integers on a number line and ordered pairs of integers
on the coordinate plane. They will develop rules of numerical patterns, work with expressions, including order of
operations, and solve equations involving multiple variables. They will accurately classify angles, triangles, and
quadrilaterals, and analyze relationships among lines, triangles, and quadrilaterals. They will recognize and
determine surface area and volume of three-dimensional shapes. Students will be expected to complete daily
assignments, and to take grade level assessments to check for understanding.
Resources for math will include Springboard Mathematics.
Science: Students will explore and begin to understand the different concepts of our universe, including the moon,
stars, relative positioning of our planets, and earth’s rotational and orbital practices. They will study matter and
energy as fundamental components of the universe, ecosystems and the part they play on our planet, climate, and
weather. We will be using a plethora of different investigative tools and supplemental resources to enable success in
science core this year.
Homework: Reading for 30 minutes a night is compulsory, and an expectation. All other homework will be assigned
as needed throughout the year.
Behavioral Expectations and Consequences
Students are expected to attend school regularly, be on time, and come prepared to learn. Students will have an
active role in establishing classroom behavior expectations consistently. If unfortunate circumstances occur, where
students are not adhering to the classroom expectations, the following interventions will take place.
Mrs. McInnes’s Classroom
Level 1 - Verbal Reminder
Level 2 - Student will be removed to another seat and have a private Teacher-Student Conference
Level 3 - Student will fill in a “Reflection’ Sheet and the incident will be recorded as a level 1 incident in Educator’s
Handbook (EH). Copies of the reflection sheet and EH entry will be sent home.
Level 4 - Student removal to a “Buddy Room” for 10-15 minutes “Think Time” and a phone call home.
(3 “Buddy Room” removals in a quarter will result in a Teacher-Parent-Student conference.)
*** Think Time - Buddy Room, is a non-punitive method of having students recognize their incorrect behavior and
giving them time to set goals for improvement.
WOW tickets will be handed out to those students following the classroom rules.
If students are observed promoting good citizenship and other appropriate behaviors the may be awarded a “purple”
(WOW) ticket. These tickets can be saved for a possible raffle or even awards later in the school year.
Cell Phones
● Students MUST have a signed Parental form to have a phone on school grounds.
● Cell phones MUST be turned OFF while on the school grounds.
● They MUST remain OFF during the day while on campus.
● They MUST be turned into the “phone tub” at the beginning of the day. The tubs will be locked in the
cupboard in Mrs. McInnes’s room. Phones will be returned at the end of the day.
**If a student is observed with a cell phone, the cell phone WILL be confiscated and then given to the office.
**A parent/legal guardian is required to pick up the cell phone in the office.
Bathroom/Hall Pass
Students will be issued with a bathroom/Hall Pass this year. They will not be allowed to leave the classroom without
first having it checked and signed by the teacher. The students will also have to sign out before leaving the
classroom.
● In case of an emergency, we will know where your child is.
● Only one student at a time will be allowed out of the classroom for the bathroom.
● There will be one hall pass issued each quarter. If the students lose it, they will not be allowed another one
until the next quarter.
● They will still have recess and lunch time available for bathroom use.
Prohibited Items
● Fidget Spinners (We do allow Fidget Cubes)
● Slime
● Gum
● Toys
● Clay/Play-Doh
● Potato Chips, Takis etc (Only Fresh Vegetable Snacks are allowed).
**Toy items that are confiscated, will go into the MAY Box and the student may or may not get them back in
May!** (Toy items include, but are not limited to, fidget spinners, slime, and clay/play-doh.)
