David Gay has been teaching drama and speech for the past three years at Dunwoody High.

With over twenty-five years of teaching experience, he taught at Alpharetta High School and Bozeman
High School in Bozeman, Montana, creating and developing theatre programs at both
schools, in addition to, coaching competitive speech teams. An adjunct professor in
speech communication at Montana State University, he directed the MSU Young People’s
Shakespeare productions of Macbeth and Twelfth Night.
At Dunwoody High, Mr. Gay has directed Almost, Maine, You Can’t Take It With
You along with the musicals, The Music Man, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,
Addams Family- The Musical, and Urinetown. Our musical theatre program has been
honored by the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Award with nominations for
Best Sound for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Best Supporting
Actor (John Spalding) for Urinetown. Mr. Gay is especially proud to be a past
nominee for Shuler Hensley Awards for Excellence in Musical Theatre for his
direction of Alpharetta High musicals Guys and Dolls and The Wedding Singer, and
for stage lighting for Oklahoma!.
A National Forensic League “Triple-Diamond coach”, Mr. Gay has guided dramatic, humorous
and duo interpretation finalists to the national championships. During the past three years, our
Dunwoody High Speech Team has won three state championships and, this past season, John Spalding
finished as an Octofinalist at both the NIETOC National Championship and the National Speech and
Debate Association National Championship. The Speech Team provides students with additional
opportunities to present dramatic works in a competitive venue, teaching students techniques in
competition and professional presentation.

Teaching philosophy: The goal of our theatre program is to provide an enriching environment for
students to become more confident with themselves, and to progress as stronger creative thinkers
and problem solvers. These lifelong skills will enable students to become more effective, polished
communicators, prepared for a highly competitive business world. Additionally, our classes create a
professional learning environment for students to grow and develop their theatrical craft in
preparation for a career in the theatre.
