Non Ossifying Fibrous Defect
Non Ossifying Fibrous Defect
Non Ossifying Fibrous Defect
DEFECT)
Defination:
Non – ossifying fibroma is a developmental defect in which a nest of
fibrous tissue appears within the bone and persists for some years
before ossifying.
Epidemiology: This, the commonest benign lesion of bone,
Site: commonest sites are the metaphyses of long bones
Cllinical feature:
It is usually asymptomatic
Almost always found in children as an incidental finding on x-
ray.
May present with pathological fracture
X-ray findings
More or less oval radiolucent area surrounded by a thin
margin of dense bone;
views in different planes may show that a lesion is adjacent
to or within the cortex
Pathology:
Although it looks cystic on x-ray, it is a solid lesion consisting of
unremarkable fibrous tissue with a few scattered giant cells.
However, it sometimes enlarges to several centimetres in
diameter and there may be a pathological fracture.
There is no risk of malignant change.
Treatment:
Treatment is usually unnecessary without complication
If the defect is very large or there is a repeated fracture, it can be
treated by curettage and bone grafting.
Prognosis: Recurrence is rare.
