Irregular nouns

*the general rule is that nouns ending in –el / -er drop the –e when adding endings

-el en ankel - ankelen - ankler – anklene (ankle)


-er en vinter - vinteren - vintrer – vintrene (winter)

*nouns ending in -er that denote occupation, nationality etc. have special plural
forms
en baker - bakeren - bakere – bakerne
en amerikaner - amerikaneren - amerikanere – amerikanerne

but also:
(a sweater) en genser - genseren - gensere - genserne

* there are some –en nouns that lack endings in indefinite plural form, like:
en ting(a thing), en feil(a mistake), en ski (a ski), en sko (a shoe)
en ting – tingen – ting – tingene

* there are also nouns that have other types of irregularities in plural forms - those
are in most cases vowel changes, or some anoumalous endings

ei/en mor (mother) - mora/moren - mødre - mødrene


en far (father) - faren - fedre - fedrene
en bror (brother) - broren - brødre - brødrene
ei/en søster (sister) - søstera/søsteren - søstre - søstrene
ei/en datter (daughter) - dattera/datteren - døtre - døtrene
ei/en tann (tooth) - tanna/tannen - tenner - tennene
ei/en natt (night) - natta/natten - netter - nettene
ei/en hånd (hand) - hånda/hånden - hender - hendene
ei/en strand (beach) - stranda/stranden - strender - strendene
ei/en stang (stick) - stanga/stangen - stenger - stengene
ei/en bok (book) - boka/boken - bøker - bøkene
ei/en fot (foot) - fota/foten - føtter - føttene
ei/en rot (root) - rota/roten - røtter - røttene
en mann (man) - mannen - menn - mennene
ei/en ku (cow) - kua/kuen - куr - куrne
ei/en gås (goose) - gåsa/gåsen - gjess - gjessene
et tre (tree) - treet - trær - trærne
et kne (knee) - kneet - knær - knærne
et øye (eye) -øyet -øyne -øynene
et teater (theatre) - teat(e)ret - teatre - teatrene
(clothes) (no plural!) - klær - klærne
(siblings) - søsken -søsknene
(money) -penger -pengene
