Children are the “Hope of the Future”. This line sounds cliché for most of us but in
reality, we do see millennial children as pillars of the nation and the most constructive and
dominant members in nation building. But how could this be achieved if we keep on seeing
children along streets and flyovers begging for help and working beyond limits taking away from
them their right to education?
Hope is in education. Education is hope. Hope lies in the hands of those who unselfishly
give and share what they have. For the beneficiaries of Cornerstone Batangas, the nightmares of
the past brought about by poverty had turned into sweet dreams when they experienced the
power of love and care from the people who happened to be strangers to them.
Most of the Cornerstone beneficiaries belong to the struggling group of their classes, with
high percentage of reading deficit. Worse than these dilemmas, these children are from less
fortunate families. Those who can’t afford in buying school paraphernalia, who patiently walk
from home to school with their rugged slippers and who attend school with empty stomach.
Hearing the cry of these poor children, The SFC Singles for Christ through Cornerstone
Batangas, armed with their God-given treasures responded to the call of service. They offered
programs such as individual tutorials, storytelling, Dolch Basic Sight Words Mentoring, creative
drawing and coloring and local educational tours giving these children the kind of childhood they
deserve to experience.
These volunteers conducted sessions during Saturdays from 7:00am to 12:00 noon. They
unselfishly rendered this kind of service thinking more for others and less for themselves. They
care to share their time, money and effort under any circumstances. They were not teachers by
profession but in their hearts live a different kind of love that gave hope to the young ones. For
them, what really matters was the extent of love they put into giving themselves.
Better reader, more interactive listener and more creative artist- this is what every
Batang Cornerstone has become far from being a timid pupil in the four corners of the room.
Being the most precious gift from above, answering their cries truly refills their hope tanks.
The seed of hope planted in their hearts by these volunteers will continue to grow and
will be the powerful weapon of these children to reach for their dreams.
