Mr. Tan was a farmer. He was very hard-working. He had four sons. They never
helped him on the farm but were spendthrift.
When Mr. Tan was sick and dying, he knew that his lazy sons would sell off his
farm. He told his sons that he had buried some treasure on the farm and whoever
managed to find the treasure would get to keep it.
After the farmer had died, his sons started to find the treasure. They dug and
turned over the soil on the farm. They worked day in and day out. After digging every

by some hunters. They brought him to their village and placed the turtle before the
Chief. He asked, “How shall we cook him?”
“You’ll have to kill me first,” said the turtle, “and take me out of this shell.”
“We’ll break your shell with sticks,” the hunters said.
“That won’t work,” said the turtle, “Why don’t you throw me in the water and
drown me?”
“Excellent idea,” said the Chief. He ordered his men to take the turtle to the sea
and throw him into the water to drown him.
They were waiting by the sea for the turtle to drown, when two little green eyes
poked up above the water and the laughing turtle said, “Don’t get your cooking pots out
