IRRIGATION CANAL

The entire water conveyance system for irrigation, comprising of the main canal,
branch canals, major and minor distributaries, field channels and water courses
have to be properly designed. The design process comprises of finding out the
longitudinal slope of the channels and fixing the cross sections. The channels
themselves may be made up of different construction materials. For the unlined
canals, there could be some passing through soils which are erodible due to high
water velocity, while some others may pass through stiff soils or rock, which may be
relatively less prone to erosion. Further, the bank slopes of canals would be different
for canals passing through loose or stiff soils or rock.

Assumptions

Water requirement for 50 ha of land is 3.5 mm/day.

Trapezoidal earth canal is to be designed and used.
Slope is relatively flat.
Distance between the source and the farm is 1,500 m.
The source of water contains unlimited supply.
Losses due to delivery is 0.05 L/s.
Irrigation period is 10 hrs/day.
Slope is 10%.
Consider the best cross section for a trapezoid canal to be b = 2y tan(θ/2).
Critical velocity is 1 m/sec.
Roughness coefficient is 0.03.
Consider clay or silty loam soil.
Assume all necessary data with justification.

Requirements

 Size of main conveyance canal which would minimize canal erosion and
sedimentation.
 Total volume of cut and fill.
 Total cost of construction.
 Make a complete detail of cross section of canal including embankment.
