How to setup License Use Runtime (LUM) 4.6.8 for


Server and Client

Common steps for License Use Runtime setup


1. Download License Use Runtime 4.6.8 and License Use Runtime 4.6.8 FixPack 13
(minimum recommended fixpack) from IBM. A login will be required to access the
download area, no cost is associated with login creation or download access

a. TIP: Google the terms IBM LUM download to shortcut to the IBM’s License Use
Runtime page.

2. Install License Use Runtime 4.6.8 by extracting the contents of the downloaded zip file,
executing the ARKWIN.EXE file and accepting the installation defaults. Complete
installation is recommended

3. Install License Use Runtime 4.6.8 FixPack 13 by extracting the contents of the
downloaded zip file, executing the SETUP.EXE file and accepting the installation defaults.

a. TIP: Although FixPack 13 and higher are not mandatory, this fixpack is the
minimum supported fixpack for use with Windows Vista. It also offers increase
LUMDriver stability and enhanced control over LUM’s use of networking ports

4. If using Windows XP: turn off the Windows Firewall. If using Windows Vista or Windows
turn off the Windows Firewall AND turn off User Account Control (UAC)

a. NOTE: If this step is not completed, client machines will not be able to obtain
licenses from the server.

Server specific steps for License Use Runtime setup


A. Setting up the Configuration Tool

1. From the Windows Start Menu select > All Programs > License Use Runtime >
Configuration Tool

2. In the Configuration Tool, activate the Network License Server checkbox, the
Network Client checkbox will be automatically activated and greyed out

a. TIP: deactivate the Nodelock License Server to avoid future confusion

3. In the Configuration Tool, select the Direct Binding icon. Enter the Full Computer
Name of the Server or the IP address and select Add

a. TIP: For redundancy, add the Full Computer Name then add the IP address.

4. In the Configuration Tool, select the Start Up icon and activate the checkbox

5. In the Configuration Tool, select the X in the upper right hand corner to close the
dialog box and save your changes

B. Starting the LUM Service

1. From the Windows Start Menu select > All Programs > License Use Runtime >
Service Manager

2. Select the Service pull down menu and Start

3. In the Service Manager, select the X in the upper right hand corner to close the
dialog box

C. Setting up the Basic License Tool

1. From the Windows Start Menu select > All Programs > License Use Runtime > Basic
License Tool

2. Select the Product pull down menu > Enroll > Multiple Products

a. TIP: The Multiple Products interface is more user friendly than the Single
Product interface and is usable even when only a single license file is
involved.

3. Browse to the license files and select Open

a. TIP: CTRL, SHIFT and CTRL-A multi-selection methods may be used to select
multiple license files

4. Select Ok to accept each license in sequence, you should see a message stating “The
Product *** has been successfully enrolled”

Configuration Tool

2. In the Configuration Tool, activate the Network License Client checkbox

3. In the Configuration Tool, select the Direct Binding icon. Enter the identical
information as added to the Network License Server

4. In the Configuration Tool, select the X in the upper right hand corner to close the
dialog box and save your changes

B. Alternate Client Setup Method

1. Copy the i4LS.INI file from the Server to c:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\IBM
