SCAFFOLD
A temporary structure which provides access on or from which persons work
or which is used to support rnateqals, plant or equipment
HEIGHT
Measured from the base of scaffold to the top assembly of ledgers and
transoms

WIDTH
The width of a scaffold measured at right angles to the ledgers from the
centre of the standards. Some times designated by the number of boards
within the standards.
LENGTH
The length of the scaffold between its extreme standards, sometimes
designated by the number of bays..
BAYS
The space between the centre lines of two adjacent standards along the face
of a scaffold
LlFT HEIGHT
The vertical distance between the main horizontal members which are callea
ledgers.
FOOT LlFT
A lift erected near the ground to give the base of the scaffold greater strength.
It is also used to set out the base of the scaffold.
BASEPLATE
Used to spread the load from standards and rakers
STANDARD
A vertical tube
LEDGER
Horizontal tube which supports the transoms
TRANSOMS
A tube fixed across the ledgers which may support the board.
BRACE
A tube fixed diagonally across the scaffold
Ledger Brace: The brace that keeps standards vertical to and from the
building
Sway Brace: Prevent scaffokls moving left and right.
RAKERISPUR
An inclined bearing tube
PUNCHEON
A standard not supported on the ground

FITTINGS.
Scaffold flttiryls can be made from either Drop Forged Sprung Steel or Pressed
Steel and when new must cornply with the appropriaPe British Standard.
Fittings which amply with the requirements of BS 1139 will have LO& Bearin
capacities as given in the table below.
It is w885aty that all fitthgs are in a ragson&Ie conditian and prepsly fastened.
They may be made of stsel or aluminium. Couptecs must be examined at regular
