    Indian cement Industry

    Today there are a number of players in the cement industry in India. However, around 20
    big names have a hold over 70% of the total cement production in India. The total
    capacity is spread over 129 plants, which is owned by 54 major companies across the
    country.

    India is the second largest cement producer in the world with a total capacity of 151.2
    million tones. With government of India kick starting various infrastructure projects,
    housing facilities and road networks, the cement industry is on fast track.

    More growth is expected in the coming years. It is also projected that cement production
    may probably rise to 236.16 MT in FY11

    The cement industry today is dominated by nearly 20 companies which comprise nearly
    70 percent of the total cement production in India.

    Domestic demand plays a crucial role in the growth of the cement industry. In fact the
    cement consumption is expected to rise more than 22 percent by 2009-10 from 2007-08.
    The state of Maharashtra leads from the front when it comes to cement consumption,
    subsequently followed by Uttar Pradesh. When it comes to cement production, Andhra
    Pradesh is at the top with 14.72% of production, while Rajasthan remains at second
    position. Interestingly, the cement companies are also scaling up their production due to
    high market demand and have actually witnessed a net profit growth rate of 85%, this
    automatically translates into the sector contributing nearly 8% to India's economic
    development.

    Today, the cement industry is undergoing different technological changes. At present,


    93 percent of the total production is done via modern dry process which is environmental
    friendly vis-à-vis the wet and semi-dry process technology.

    Further, cement industry in India has continued with its total capacity utilization which
    has helped maintain a 10% growth rate. In 2006-07, the total despatch was about 155
    MT, which then climbed up to 170 MT in 2007-08. In October 2009 12.22 MT cement
    was dispatched which was about 9% higher than the total cement despatch of 11.21 MT
    in the corresponding month of the previous year.
