Major Job Duties and Responsibilities
o Perform analysis and testing to establish the system component design requirements and engine requirements at an
agreed upon interface point using Matlab and Labview
o Utilize system analysis skills to investigate after-treatment performance characteristics. Utilize data analysis skills to
reduce test data, visualize results, and present conclusions
o Work closely with performance engineering and controls groups on overall system development, modeling, algorithms,
and virtual sensor models
o Use system modeling and optimization skills to create control algorithms and calibration methods. This work includes
understanding and predicting compromises such as: exhaust heat, exhaust flow, exhaust smoke, and fuel efficiency
o Design diagnostic and fault accommodation strategies. This includes defining various strategies focused on minimizing
progressive damage to the after-treatment system, after-treatment protection modes, and engine derates algorithms
o Participate in full system vehicle testing to prove acceptable system performance
o Use test design skills to develop On-board Diagnostics test and calibration methods
o Create new tools, methods and procedures for data analysis, testing and tuning where none currently exist

o Develop, implement, and use exhaust after-treatment dynamic system models to support engine and after-treatment
system research and product development activities
o Identify model needs via input from and interaction with after-treatment functional and system integration leaders
o Evaluate supplier provided and commercially available after-treatment modeling tools to determine what tool Cummins
should use
o Integrate supplier provided and commercially available after-treatment models into Cummins’ after-treatment modeling
suite of tools
o Use Matlab/Simulink to validate, troubleshoot, improve, and develop Cummins’ after-treatment dynamic system models
o Create and document standard practices for developing and applying after-treatment models and integrating them with
engine system models
o Work closely with engine, vehicle, and controls model developers to create an entire vehicle system modeling
architecture
o Communicate status of after-treatment performance modeling to internal and external customers and management as
required
o Document results of projects in technical reports and presentations

o Act as an active member of an Original Equipment Manufacturer’s (OEM) design team. Interact within, support, and
lead cross-functional teams towards engine integration
o Support all OEM’s specific engineering activities and ensuring that the program delivers to quality, cost, and delivery
targets.
o Liaison/champion and communicate customer product needs. Ensure the Cummins engine installations meet or exceed
customer requirements.
o Act as the voice of the customer for the OEM within Cummins. Be the Cummins internal expert on the OEM’s
machines, business, and installations.
o Develop plans and deliverables between Cummins and OEM for new product development. Coordinate joint meetings to
manage schedule, testing/analysis, and data delivery.
o Provide engineering support and leadership to the OEM for the Installation Quality Assurance (IQA) process.
o Use the IQA process, including electronic interface, calibration sign-off and after-treatment system verifications as
appropriate to ensure consistency and quality of installations.
o Ensure availability of information schedule such as CAD models, tech packages, heat rejection to customers
o Write engineering releases, as appropriate, that adhere to product definition standards and guidelines.

Major Job Duties and Responsibilities
1. Develop Cummins engines to meet emissions legislation, while providing the customer with the best-in-class
performance, fuel economy, drivability, and power.
2. Make sound decisions in pushing the mechanical stress and design limits of the engine components to achieve best
performance.
3. Conduct test cell and vehicle experiments to determine hardware, software and calibration specifications that best
meet the technical performance requirements of the project.
4. Document results in technical reports.
5. Use current methods of acquiring and analyzing test data while finding ways to improve both processes
6. Analyze, report, and act on test information
7. Troubleshoot engine, test cell, and vehicle performance problems with technicians and facility experts
8. Participate in team engine performance and calibration design reviews
9. Provide support to other Value Package Introduction (VPI) and Current Product Support (CPS) development teams
on performance related issues
10. Conduct Emissions transparency tests as required for all current product changes. This includes reviewing all
product changes for potential impact and recommending appropriate testing.
11. Provide support for Internal Emissions audit failures by determining an appropriate course of action including
conducting additional CVS tests.

o Ability to work effectively in a team environment with both hourly and exempt employees from multiple organizations

o Design Verification, Planning and Reporting (DVP&R)
o Some experience with engines and internal combustion - Diesel/gas/alt fuel/aero (preferred)
o Related intern or coop experience (preferred, but not required)
o Practical hands-on experience such as vehicle or home repair (preferred)
o Experience with data analysis, manipulation and presentation and data based decision making
o Excellent written and verbal communication skills. This includes writing test plans, special instructions, work orders and
technical reports.
o Knowledge in (or willing to learn) test cell instrumentation
o Knowledge in (or willing to learn) Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) tools
o Experience with data acquisition hardware and software
o Analytical problem solving skills
o Mechanical aptitude
