in-campus and off-campus settings;
4. establish linkages/ partnership with key local national/international industry players and law
enforcement agencies for on the job training and immersion programs;
5. engage both faculty and students in research and extension activities in pursuit of new knowledge
and development initiatives in law enforcement, criminal justice and forensic sciences;
Development/training program
Whenever possible, University offers on the job seminars and workshops (training programs) to equip
employees with better skills and knowledge necessary to their work as a faculty. Also, selected faculty
members are sent to seminars outside school.
We recognize the value of educational tours, field trips and other off-campus activities to vitalize
classroom instruction and to add realism to school experiences.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Every member of faculty should upgrade his professional competence. He should keep abreast with
the latest developments in the areas of general educations and of his specialization to be able to give
a well-rounded instruction to his students.
He is called upon to continuously for strive for academic excellence and professional growth by
means of:
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
The Institutional Community Extension Service Program (ICESP) provides opportunities for faculty to
grow professionally and personally through community extension activities. Faculty members may
serve as:
5. participant in free clinic, tree planting, Christmas treat for disadvantaged individuals and other civic
oriented activities; and
6. solicitor/ contributor for funds and other resources as well as relief donations.
Faculty members are therefore strongly encouraged to undertake community service at the college or
institutional level.
The Faculty Development Program offers projects, services, and activities that would lead to the
holistic development of the faculty as:
Individual Person – the university believes that people are its most important assets. As such, it
provides avenues for the faculty for an on-going personal growth. It provides activities that touch not
only the intellect but also the psycho-spiritual side of man.
A Professional Teacher – Various seminar/workshops/ training and programs are given for the on-
going professional growth of the faculty. These will not only hone their skills in teaching but will also
give them opportunities to further their studies and conduct researchers that will be useful in their
classroom instruction.
A Community Member – Professional and personal growth is not confined within one’s self. The
faculty members are given a chance to work and share whatever they could offer to the members of
the community.
POLICY
As an educational institution, the university is vested with the social responsibility of conveying and
promoting values and attitudes that prepare the students to be responsible members of the society.
Faculty members, above all, are expected to provide modelling behavior such that students will
experience what is told to them in the institution.
TO STUDENTS
These professionals also analyze and develop crime prevention strategies, the causes of crime, and
how the community relates to crime. Criminologists may be involved in crime scene investigations or
attend autopsies seeking evidence and information to analyze the crime.
(INTRO) NECESSITY OF CRIMINOLOGY: For those who already know something of criminology,
and those who are involved in the control of the crime and treatment of offenders, especially at a
higher level, the need for a broader and deeper knowledge is obvious. It can be argued and easily
proven that policies based on sound knowledge of criminology are likely to be more effective than
those based on anecdotes and untested assumptions. The practitioner who has a broader knowledge
of criminology than what is only needed in the performance of his duties is likely to be more effective
than the one who does not have a broad knowledge.
In the department of sociology, deviance or criminology may not be taught at all if there is no
qualified staff to teach it and if there is no inter departmental relationship and collaboration with the
department of law.
That the teaching of Crminology as a Science and as a subject of university study and research is a sine
qua non of any meaningful system of penology does not need any emphasis in the context of the
contemporary need of the developing countries of Africa.
FACULTY
By sharing the expertise and knowledge of faculty and students through seminars in all the main cities
and towns should be an dditional means of inculcating the right knowledge about the criminal in
society, thus fostering a greater sense of social obligation among an ever increasing circle of public.
It is not the same as university-based institute, and going by the tradition and experience of older
institutions for the prevention of crime and treatment of offenders.
A university program for criminology which will involve not only teaching but also collaborations with
penal institutions, also has the advantage of offering a common forum for personnel from the
different arms of the criminal justice system. This will lead eventually to mutual understanding in the
pursuit of their different professions.
It is not enough to have criminology taught in the university, it is equally important to ensure that
those with the criminological training have a place to work to use their acquired knowledge,
otherwise, the program may not attract as many students as one would wish.
