Joshua was chosen by Moses and went with him to Mount Sinai to deliver the Law.

He was chosen by God to follow

Moses as Israel’s leader.

In the book of Joshua, you will learn about:

 How Joshua lead Israel to occupy Canaan by bringing down the walls of the city.
 How the Promised Land was divided among the 9 ½ tribes of Israel (Joshua 15-19)
 Joshua’s death and his “farewell address” where he called upon the people to serve God with sincerity and
truth. (Joshua 23-24) (God’s judgement for disobedience was as certain as his blessing for obedience.)
In Judges and Ruth, you will learn more about the history of Israel, including:
 The disobedience of Israel (practicing idolatry) that lead to the period of judges (not “judges” as we know
them today...see below)
 A 300-year period of recurring sin, punishment by oppression, repentance, and deliverance (by God through
a judge).
 At least twelve judges were to deliver them from their oppressors to govern them under His authority and
covenant.
 How God used Deborah and Barak to lead the army of Israel to destroy the Canaanites.
 How Gideon’s army defeated the Midianite army
 The story of Samson and how he killed the Philistines
 The stories of Tamar, Rahab, and Ruth (and how her story expresses love in four ways)

Conquest of the Land

Joshua 1-3, 6-8

Before Joshua led the Israelites across the Jordan River into Canaan, he sent two men as spies to the city
of Jericho. Rahab hid them. She was spared when Jericho was destroyed. God performed a miracle at
the Jordan River by providing dry ground on which the Israelites could pass (Joshua 3:17).

Israel's conquest (through faith & obedience, not by means of greater forces)--over Central Canaan
(Jericho & Ai)--idolatry

The Israelites were to walk around the walls of Jericho…(See details in the lesson)

Israel was defeated at Ai.

Division of the Land/Death of Joshua

Joshua → follower of Moses → Leader in Canaan (A Godly leader leads by a Christlike example)

Joshua 23-24--his farewell address (died at 110 years)

 called upon the people to fear the Lord & to serve Him with sincerity and truth.
 God’s judgement for disobedience was as certain as his blessing for obedience.
 Probably the best description of Joshua's life and ministry was that he had left nothing undone
that the Lord had commanded (Joshua 11:15).

Judges: From Othneil to Shamgar

Judges is the 2nd book in a series of 12 historical books. It contains the earliest history of Israel. It gives
the history of Israel for about three hundred years following the death of Joshua.
IMPORTANT: The judges that are referred to here are NOT like we think of judges today. They were
people chosen by God to deliver for the following tasks:
 Deliver His people, usually by war, from their oppressors
 Govern the people during the peace that followed

Judges 1:1-3:4 -- conditions of sin (especially idolatry) that made judges necessary.
Judges 3:5-16:31 -- history of the judges
300 years of pattern: Sin → Punishment (Oppression) → Repentance → Deliverance by God (through a
Judge)

Othniel (Judges 3:10)--God raised up Othniel and gave him victory over the Mesopotamians. Under Othniel,
Israel had rest for forty years.
Ehud--The Lord raised up Ehud to deliver the Israelites. Ehud slew Eglon and led Israel to complete victory
over the Moabites. Under Ehud, Israel had rest for eighty years, except for one brief oppression by the Philistines.
Shamgar (3:31)--By the miraculous power of God through Shamgar, Israel was delivered from
the Philistines. Shamgar slew six hundred Philistines with an ox goad.

Judges: From Deborah to Samson

 Deborah (4:14 & Ch 5) --a prophetess who, along with Barak, was used by the Lord to destroy the mighty
Canaanite army
 Gideon (7:20)--a new deliverer/new judge. Gideon & his army of only 300 men would save Israel
 Tola--from the tribe of Issachar, ruled twenty-three years
 Jair-- the seventh judge
 Jephthah--God used Jephthah to deliver the Israelites from the Ammonites
 Ibzar-- from Bethlehem
 Elon--ruled ten years
 Abdon--who ruled 8 years
 Samson (Judges 15 & 16)--His strength was in his hair so the Philistines (with help from Delilah) cut his hair
while he was sleeping. His strength came back when his hair grew back.He judged Israel 20 years.

Three Women Who Had to Endure Unpleasant Things:

 1. Tamar (Genesis 38:6-30)
 2. Rahab (Joshua 2:1-21) Rahab + Salmon = Boaz
 3. Ruth (the book of Ruth) King David’s great-great grandmother

The Story of Ruth

The Book of Ruth is the 3rd book in the series of 12 Old Testament books of history (Joshua, Judges,
Ruth, First and Second Samuel, First and Second Kings, First and Second Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and
Esther. )

Ruth was devoted to her mother-in-law, Naomi. Because the family was poor, Ruth offered to help work
in Boaz’s fields.

According to the law of Moses, the closest relative of a man who died could buy his property and marry
his widow. This was called being a kinsman-redeemer.
Boaz wanted to marry Ruth, but he was not the closest relative. However, Boaz received permission
from the nearest relative to marry Ruth. The marriage of Ruth and Boaz was very important because
they continued the line of descendants through whom the Redeemer, the Savior, would come. A son
was born to Ruth and Boaz, named Obed. Obed became the grandfather of David and an ancestor of
Christ.

The story of Ruth expresses love in 4 ways (through 4 relationships):

1. Naomi & Ruth
2. Ruth & Boaz
3. God & Naomi--God filled her emptiness by Ruth's love and faithful service
4. God & Ruth--God's love for Ruth was shown by bringing her and Boaz together and making her a
part of Jesus' lineage
