The spile bars are on an angle of 10.43 degrees. Therefore the load is not normal to the bar. To
simplify the calculation the spile bar has been analysed as if the load is normal to it. Resolving
forces normal to the spile bar would reduce the forces, as shown in the diagram below. The
Horizontal force 1301N (7191N x sin 10.43° = 1301N) has been ingnored.

Two types of supports are used in this calc. Fixed and pinned.
Fixed supports can resist vertical and horizontal forces as well as a moments.
Pinned support can resist both vertical and horizontal forces but not a moment.
It has been assumed that when the spile bars are in place they will rest against the side of the
hopper wall.
The free end of the spile bar will be able to rotate and therefore will be a pinned support
The support end will allow some rotation. Therefore it has been classed a pinned support.
When the spile bar is being withdrawn, analysing the spile bare as a fixed cantilever is the best
approximation of what will occur. In reality some rotation will occur, but to use a pinned support is
not practical.
4 The stockpile analysied in the Jenkie report was Ø98.27m. The actual size is Ø103.6m. This is
not considered to be a significate difference.
