Steps Skills & Content Teaching-Learning Remarks/ Teaching
Activities Aids
Set Induction  Knowledge about joining 2D 1. Teacher distributes Resources/
(5 minutes) shapes: square and rectangle as two different 2D materials:
composite shapes. shapes each of the 2-D shapes(10
group of pupils. pieces), manila card
SQUARE RECTANGLE
2. Pupils are needed to Value:
fill the column Confidence
provided by teacher
according to its type CCTS:
whether square or Discovering
rectangle.

3. Teacher joins the

different shapes and
introduces it as the
composite shapes.

 Introduces composite shape

Shape 1:

Any combination of 2D
shapes
a) square and square,
b) rectangle and rectangle,
c) square and rectangle
Step 1  Calculate the area of the 1. Teacher uses the same Resources/
(10 following composite 2-D shapes. shapes and labels materials:
minutes)  Using the basic area formula: them individually; A Manila cards
and B.
Area = Length x Breadth 2. Teacher demonstrates Value:
the calculation of the Confidence
Examples: area by using given
Shape 1 formula. CCTS:
3. Teacher gives another Calculating, relating
6 cm two examples of
4 cm different shapes.
4. Teacher discusses the
6 cm A B answer with pupils.
4 cm

Area of square A:
6 cm x 6 cm = 36 cm2
Area of square B:
4 cm x 4 cm = 16 cm2
Total area: square A+ square B
= 36 cm2 +16 cm2 = 52 cm2

7 cm

Area of rectangle A:
5 cm x 2 cm = 10 cm2
Area of rectangle B:
7 cm x 2 cm = 14 cm2
Total area: rectangle A+ rectangle
B
= 10 cm2 +14 cm2 = 24 cm2
Shape 3

3 cm B

10 cm
Area of square A:
5 cm x 5 cm = 25 cm2
Area of rectangle B:
10 cm x 3 cm = 30 cm2
Total area: rectangle A+ rectangle
B
= 25 cm2 +30 cm2 = 55 cm2

Step 2  Group activity on calculating the 1. Teacher distributes Resources/

(15 area of the following composite shapes to each of groups. materials:
minutes) 2-D shapes. Colour paper (2D
2. Each pupils need to shapes), A4 white
combine the shape papers and glues.
A B according to its colour

A B piece of A4 white paper.
CCTS:
4. Pupils follow the steps Evaluating, solving
to find the composite area.
A B
4. Pupils present their work
in front of the class
according to its colour.

4. Teacher checks the

answer with other groups.

Step 3  Worksheet 1 1. Teacher distributes Resources/

(10 Worksheet 1 to the materials:
minutes) class. Worksheet 1

2. Pupils are given 5 Value:

minutes to answer the Reasoning
question.
CCTS:
3. Teacher discusses the Solving
correct answer with
the pupils.
Closure  Summarize the lesson 1. Teacher pick a few of Resources/
5 minutes pupils to summarize materials:
“Area of composite shapes can be today’s lesson. Worksheet 1
obtained by adding the area of two
shapes.” 2. Teacher makes a Value:
conclusion. Confidence
