The key takeaways are learning about the solar system including the planets, their order and movement around the sun. It also teaches about concepts like orbit and revolution.

The purpose of the lesson plan is to teach students about the solar system, specifically identifying the eight planets, their order, and how they revolve around the sun.

The steps involved in teaching the solar system include showing a video, reciting the mnemonic to remember planet order, explaining concepts like orbit and revolution, having students draw and model the solar system, and assessing their understanding through worksheets and activities.

Lesson Plan

Day: M T W T F Date: ___________ Time: _____________ Year: 5

Learning Area: Earth and Space Sciences

Topic: Planets in our solar system

Curriculum content description: (from SCSA or ELYF)

-The Earth is part of a system of planets orbiting around a star (the sun).

Students’ prior knowledge:

- Students know that earth is a planet.

- The sun is the provider of light and energy on earth.

Learning purpose:

 Identifying the other planets that make up the solar system.

 Learn the sequence of planets in the solar system
 Recognising the role of the sun as the centre of the solar system
 Learn new words like ‘orbit’, revolution.

Learning objectives:

On completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

 Define what a solar system is.
 Identify the eight planets of the solar system.
 Know what an orbit and revolution mean.
 Arrange the planets in the solar system

Preparation and Resources:

- Picture of the solar system to be shown on the projector.

-A model of the solar system.

-Also play the video of the solar system on the AV. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w36yxLgwUOc

Resources Required

Model: Solar System model for display, Laptop, Projector and screen, coloured paper, coloured pens, tape, scissors
and worksheets.

PROCEDURE

Opening to Lesson

Before we begin our lesson today, can anyone tell me Our last topic of discussion was ‘Planet Earth’
what we discussed in our previous class?

Very good. Now, today I’m going to show you a picture. It is a Solar system.
Can anyone tell me what it is?

Wonderful! That’s correct. Our Topic today is the Solar

system.
We shall now see a short video on the solar system.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w36yxLgwUOc

After seeing the video, can anyone tell me how many Eight planets make up the solar system
planets make up the solar system?
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus
Very nice. What are the names of the planets? and Neptune (in random sequence)

An easy way to remember the sequence of the planets

is to learn this line:
MY VERY EASY METHOD JUST SPEEDS UP NAMING
PLANETS. First letter of each word is the name of the
planet in its order from the sun.
MY VERY EASY METHOD JUST SPEEDS UP NAMING
Let’s repeat this line a few times to learn the sequence PLANETS.
of planets.

You are all fast learners. Very nice!

The planets move in circles around the sun

Did anyone notice how the planets moved around the
sun?
Correct, that circle or path that a planet takes to move The “path” that the planets take to move around the
around the sun is called an ‘ORBIT’. sun is called an Orbit.
So again class, what is an Orbit?

Does anyone know how many days are there in a year? There are 365 days in a year.

Correct answer. The earth takes 365 days a year to

complete its orbit around the sun. That one circle
around the sun is called a ‘REVOLUTION’.
Every planet takes a certain number of days/ time to
complete its orbit around the sun. Therefore, one orbit
equals one revolution of planet around the sun.
So, what is a revolution of planet? The number of days a planet takes to complete one
orbit around the sun is called a revolution.

Wonderful. Now, let’s do an activity to recap and revise

today’s lesson

Activity:

 Give them worksheets to fill out the names of planets.

 Making the students draw the solar system to see if they have understood how the planets revolve
around the sun and their position in the solar system
 Asking the students to make a group of nine and arrange themselves like eight planets and sun to make
up the solar system by making labels to stick on their shirts.

Evaluation:

 On the basis of their worksheets and group activity the teacher will be able to assess the students.
 For homework, the students can write 5 facts about their favourite planets to be discussed in the
following class.
Worksheet to be completed by students (Sample)

Name the planets in the Solar System

Day: M T W T F Date: ___________ Time: _____________ Year: 3

Learning Area: Humanities and Social Science

Topic: Gratitude

Student’s Prior Knowledge

 The students have been asked to use a notebook to make a Gratitude Journal.
 Students practice gratitude journaling every day after lunch.

Learning Objectives

 The students learn to be thankful for something good they did that day or someone did a good deed
