Reggio Emilia: Grace and Britannia

Science Station

Brief Outline of Activity:

1. A small plate or glass container will be set around the table. In the middle of the table a tray of
loose parts will be accessible for all participants at the station. On a second tray there will be
edible foods that can be dissected. In the middle of these two trays, there will be a tray of tools
that can be used to investigate and interact with the materials present.

2. Beside the loose parts on either end of the table will be suggestion cards. By including these
cards, the program co-ordinator doesn't need to provide input. This will closely match the
environment found in a Reggio-inspired classroom, where the children can use their own
creativity and imagination to conduct investigations.

3. The teacher will ask questions as the participants are becoming involved with the materials.
They will explain how these questions might be used in a Reggio-inspired environment, and
what kind of investigations and new classroom changes that might lead to.

4. The participants will then be introduced to tools that they could use on and with the materials
such as a plastic box, a plastic knife to dissect the edible food, or a small rake to use on the
sand, leaves, and grass, as well as to mix the loose parts together.
